If drilling through for external lights / adaptable box / etc I will put a piece of 20mm plastic conduit through the cavity also. Did exactly this yesterday in fact :)

The regs on where you can and cant drill holes in joists are quite clear, but what about if rewiring for a material change of use where new regs must apply? Would it be okay to rewire through holes which no longer comply? The holes in question are closer than 0.25 of the span to the wall.....but...
I need to install a cu which is over 3m from a new PME supply. Have searched but can't seem to find any 'best practice' advise on what cable to use etc. The cu is 5 meters away. Whats best method?? Is there detailed info on this situation anywhere?

Because it's such a tiny shared area between the two flats (about 2m!!) it just seemed excessive having a complete separate supply. But a shared area it is and like you point out this will involve applying regs as such relating to e/l.

Got a job - 3 bed house being split top and bottom into 1 bed flats.
Nothing unusual about the wiring in the flats but what about the shared hallway?
In a big block there would be a landlords supply of which all residents would pay a management fee, but a complete separate supply seems...
