House to flat conversion dilemma

Got a job - 3 bed house being split top and bottom into 1 bed flats.

Nothing unusual about the wiring in the flats but what about the shared hallway?
In a big block there would be a landlords supply of which all residents would pay a management fee, but a complete separate supply seems excessive for 2 flats!

2 switches one belonging to each flat and controlling different spots was the solution I had in mind iIe 4 spots flat 1 controlls 1 and 3 flat 2 controlls 2 and 4 (4 would be upstairs)

Do you think this would be okay?? If not any other suggestions??

Myles, you say theres no problem about the flats wiring, i guess that you are somehow altering the wiring to create 3x seperatetly wired metered flats, if so why not create a landlords consumer unit as to split the cost 3x ways to the tennants, don,t forget about e/m lighting and smoke/det in each flat interlinked.

Hi Jonny,

Because it's such a tiny shared area between the two flats (about 2m!!) it just seemed excessive having a complete separate supply. But a shared area it is and like you point out this will involve applying regs as such relating to e/l.
Time to to stick my nose furthur into my regs pdf's before planning design

Are these flats being rented out or sold.Wouldn't it be easier to put the hallway lights on the downstairs flat lighting circuit and put them on a push/timer switch.How much will it cost the person over a year,next to nothing.

last time i did a similar job i put out side flood light on ground floor falt, fire alarm and emergency lighting on first floor flat and hall / stair lights on second floor flat, as the landlord didnt want his own supply ( or a bill) this is written into the tennancy agreement by the letting agents and all seem to be happy, seeing as actual electric used is minimil anyway.

Cheers lads that good advice going to go ahead and plan it as suggested:

Will put a push button on the bottom by front door on a timer supplied by downstairs which will light the short hall downstairs, then a two way switch at the bottom and top of the stairs to illuminate the stairs/top landing supplied by upstairs. Will serve e/l and fire alarm from upstairs. All this can be drawn into the freehold agreement between the flats.
