    That's the bit I don't understand - this is a small bedroom with the light switch just inside the door. Apart from sockets, there were no other switches, controls etc in this room when we moved into the house, so not sure what it would have switched to when light was turned off. It hasn't caused...

    Thanks to all for quick reply. Makes sense when you point out that different manufacturers may vary the on/off positions (especially when old switch is 20+ years). I guess it only became an issue with this switch as it used both 'L' ports. Will probably switch L1/L2 now that I know it's safe...

    Have just replaced an old single plastic light switch with stainless steel version (also added an earth wie to connect switch to metal back box). Original had Red wire into Com, Yellow in L1 and Red in L2 - all single wires. New switch was identical setup and I marked cables before removing...

    Thanks for that info. We probably should have thought about the lights earlier in our kitchen redo (just didn't realise I couldn't get a straight swap with extra-slim LED strips that would be hidden behind our pelmet). Everything else is done, so I'm not in a position to raggle new cables etc...

I was going to go with LED link lights for the reason you state, but unfortunately the light pelmet on my kitchen wall units is VERY shallow, which means that even a slimline strip light can be seen below the pelmet.
