Yes.
In terms of compliance with RCD requirements it's fine although not very convenient in the event of a fault and if the RCD protects multiple circuits you could maybe argue the installation isn't 'divided up' sufficiently although its a common thing to see.
Fitting an enclosure outside the bathroom with an RCD in it did cross my mind but aesthetically this wouldn't look very good and it would be a strange setup to have an RCD enclosure half way along a lighting circuit.
In an ideal world Brianmoooore, the entire circuit i would RCD at source and...
Its annoying as it looks like i will have to RCD at the CU end to include the entire lighting circuit which means I'm risking running into pre existing faults that have to be explained to customer.
Who would be happy to use an RCD spur noted as a departure on the cert given that I'm using the...
my thoughts exactly, the BS7288 reference you linked Ian doesn't really make much sense to be honest, basically saying you can use them but its pretty pointless because it wont be doing anything that the devices we demand upstream wont be doing.
This seems a crazy situation that really ought to have been sorted.
It seems we don't really have a consensus across the industry about whether an RCD spur to BS7288 can be used to provide protection to a bathroom.
Technically it appears as though it is fine and a departure on the cert is what...
On a wider point isnt this poor by the reg writers?
Not got my 17th to hand but were 7288 devices listed for additional protection in there? Presumably so.
The need for rcd’s on bathroom circuits must throw this conundrum up often so you would think this would be clarified with reasoning one...
Cheers, definitely an option but moving the mcb onto the rcd side probably easier (space in CU) although id lose a bit of installation division. My main worry is inheriting faults on other parts of the circuit if i rcd the lot.....
Any thoughts on using the rcd fcu option?
Hi James
I was under the impression that as the work is outside the zones that the work is not notifiable, that's the last NICEIC guidance i remember on it unless it has been changed?
Looking at a bathroom modification and wouldn't mind some input on the need for RCD protection.
Bathroom has existing light and wall fan. Customer wants downlights fitting and ive also said the fan needs an isolator as it currently doesn't have one. No other electrical circuits in the room. No...
I was leaning towards a code 3 of improvement recommended given that the IR is fine and the set-up has been this way since 2007 i have been told. Maybe as others have suggested enhanced EICR frequency of 3-5 years. The property is a rental so has to be done every 5 years anyway.
As the question...
protection is MCB from a split load board. MCB on the protected side. The cable doesnt 'need' RCD protection as it comes out of the wall behind the CU which is on the inside of the house.
Thinking more in terms of EICR code for using the T+E in the ducting where it potentially is sat in water...
When doing an EICR what code (if any) would you guys give to a piece of twin and earth cable in a duct outside.
The duct runs from the side of the house approx 10 metres to the detached garage. The cable is exposed for about half a meter where it comes out of house wall where it is clipped and...
Sorry Richard, i mean the BS1363/A trailing socket (see link) cant be connected to the mains supply according to instructions. Yet regs allow a normal 1363-2 socket outlet to be used in wiring stystems to connect lights to...
Working on an industrial radial lighting circuit, 6 son high bay fittings each connected from a conduit box via a short length of flex from the main circuit (terminal strip inside conduit box).
Problem they are getting is whenever a fitting goes faulty it takes the entire circuit out. Ideal...
The tx only supplies this building, definetly. Although i dont know the KVA size of the transformer - it is on site but only the DNO have access. On the side of the tx is a 'fuse cabinet' which has fuseways much like a DB from which the waveform cables originate. I will be adding some...
From looking around the place and at the age of stuff i think that the second supply was run in maybe 10-15 years after the first as the premises and building grew. Id guess the original stuff is maybe mid 70's with the second supply being put in around the mid 90's.
Ive had a quick scan of the DNO earthing arrangment downloads, not exactly light reading and one for tonight! As i remember it, PNB is used mainly when the tx supplies one customer only so that would fit and with the setup i have encountered. The CNE conductor is carried through to the...
