    Metal lamppost in garden... TNC-S

Via the lamp post (for e.g.). I think they are. And if the gas pipe is burried in the earth (as they often are) then current can flow to the general mass of earth without anyone having to touch it. As it can through this lamp post. And that would keep the lights on - until the gas pipe...

    Metal lamppost in garden... TNC-S

But the neutral path is there - via the CPCs and earth mass to the PME earth links (see my previous post).

So I was wrong about the 100A limit. Even worse. Not sure who the entertainment provider is?

    Metal lamppost in garden... TNC-S

The path I'm seeing is as follows: supply transformer, supply line conductors, cutout, meter, CU incl. MCBs, final circuit lines, loads, final circuit neutrals, CU, cutout neutral/earth, main earth conductor, CU earth bar, final circuit CPCs, earthed metal work also connected directly to earth...

Yes, point taken, so in practice it would probably never reach 100A, but surely it is theoretically possible to overload the CPC, depending on what equipment is running while the neutral is open circuit. It cannot exceed 100A (at least not substantially for very long) because of the cutout.

Assuming it's domestic 100A is the max rating of the cutout.

So perhaps bonding is the wrong term. But we must surely do something to remove the risk of up to 100A going through a 1.0mm2 CPC?

    Metal lamppost in garden... TNC-S

Potentially putting very high currents through very small CPCs if these are connected to earth (e.g. by this lamp post) and the PME still has connections to earth on the supply side of the break. So surely the OP should be putting 10mm2 bonding in place to this lamp. Or else somehow insulating...

    Metal lamppost in garden... TNC-S

Is the problem with o/c neutrals not more to do with overloading the 1.0 / 1.5mm2 cpc if all the neutral current (including from shower, cooker etc) is trying to get back to the supply neutral via said cpc, rather than anything to do with shock? And isn't that why we have to run 10mm2 main...

Domestic remodel - Sanity check on a couple of things

Why all the talk of diversity? This is a single load so diversity is not applicable - not like a cooker with 4 hobs, oven and grill, which will never all be on at the same time. If this is on, it's on, and drawing 22A. As others have said, overload is not an issue so I'd go with 6.0mm2 and...

    Grants for advertising?

Thanks all for the thoughts. I guess it is a scam. LeeH - I'm not seeing the post you refer to - but neither do I see anything else that seems to relate to these grants, which raises my suspicions about the whole thing.

    Grants for advertising?

I got a text message the other day, advertising "GRANTS with NO FEES" (their capitalisation) for marketting costs, from "BizFund". Anyone know if this is real or a scam? Seems too good to be true.

Anyone fill the gavity where the tails enter

Stop the drafts so the householder is not tempted to seal with something unsuitable, like thermal insulation, that could cause the tails to overheat. Just a thought (and one I tend to act on).

    Who uses a tool belt?

I am on at least my third tool belt. It has two big pouches and one small one and is still not big enough! I use it when dressing wires / making connections etc, but not so much for things like drilling, chasing, general dismantling and reassembling etc. as the tools needed are too big to fit...

Brexit and the 18th Edition Regulations

How about imperial cable sizes? But seriously, nations, governments, ngos, etc. will surely keep cooperating across boarders on developing standards in order to share costs. Also, I can't seriously see us 'de-harmonising' unless we want to completely stop all trade with other countries. The...

Earthing for solar off grid system

Hi All Planning an off-grid solar system and I’m pretty confident about most of it except for one thing - earthing. I believe the inverter I will use, a Victron Phoenix 12/350, has a floating earth - so there will be 230V L-’N’, 115V L-E and 115V ’N’-E. The system will power an existing (old)...

LED MR16s on DC LED drivers

Interesting - I wonder if this is similar to the stroboscopic effect from fluorescent lighting - and whether it has similar implications for use in workshops and other places with moving machinery? I think I looked into this a while ago before fitting an LED batten in a domestic garage and...

LED MR16s on DC LED drivers

Thanks all for the helpful comments. He has now ordered DC compatible MR16s to go with the DC power supplies, after the AC ones started flashing rapidly following being switched off and then on again! The power supplies say they are DC constant voltage LED drivers or something to that effect...

LED MR16s on DC LED drivers

Struggling to find a consensus on this - is it OK to power MR16 LEDs off a DC power source? I have been asked to do this by a customer who has bought the lamps and transformers himself, but the MR16s actually say AC on them so I'm uneasy about it. He says he has connected them temporarily...
