I need Help : Cutting 152mm Hole in to Drywall

Do you mean a standard skimmed plasterboard ceiling? How thick is the plasterboard. I take it you haven’t hit a joist? As others have said, don’t force it, just use a small amount of pressure.

    Wiring diagram help needed

Look up the great John Ward (JW) on YouTube. Seem to remember that he covers it very well. Some of the old GSH electrical videos are good too. 😁

Any old guys/gals started in College this week?

Did a college evening course a couple of years back. Mixture of youngsters and several lads originally from Eastern Europe. Youngsters spent most of the time talking about girls & what drugs they’d taken. Eastern European lads worked their socks off & blasted the course. It was good fun, enjoy...

I Need Work Access Training Electrical Apprenticeships

Can they actually guarantee an apprenticeship? I did one of their courses a few years back. Got some of the basic C&G & Logic qualifications but would not recommend them at all.

    Cable Requirements for EV Charging

Probably still too many unknowns. Likely that there are some on here with experience of similar scenarios and up to date knowledge of EV chargers & their requirements. Good luck 😁

    Cable Requirements for EV Charging

Hi Scrummy. I think you would need a site visit from a spark to assess the existing supply and your proposed specifications. They would then be able to give you options. Cable specs will vary according to loads, distances and external factors.

Why are single gang boxes still made with 4 fixing lugs?

What about the single or double knock out options on the sides? Lugs on all sides enables you to orientate accordingly.

Moving sockets upwards from skirting boards

Presumably, with the new consumer unit you have an EICR for the whole house wiring? As DPG and others, sell as is.

    Dealings with NEICIC..?

Classic example of of privatising a regulatory public safety / industry responsibility. Government abstains from taking responsibility for safety standards, hands over to a private company that is only interested in profit. Cue the political debate 🤔😜 The professionals get ripped off & the...

Would you work in a rat infested loft

Look after number one and steer clear… or invest in appropriate full PPE and quadruple the charge with upfront payment. 😜 and make sure it’s done before summer. 😁

Can I confirm how to test for and how to find a borrowed neutral?

First place I’d look would be the two way lighting for the stairs, if you have them. Any dodgy wiring in and around kitchen cabinets etc?

replacement cu not acceptable for NIC / Napit certification

Strange. Would have thought and new CU would be ideal? Why don’t you show them a new CU install and that that the last two circuits were additional? 😜

    Installation of Outdoor Light

Post a pic of the wires at the switch? They may not necessarily be neutral, they could be live I.e a switched live that has not been sleeved in the correct colour. Make sure you switch the circuit off before removing the switch cover though in case any connections are loose.

How to fit a metallic back box on a stud wall?

If you are building a stud wall from scratch you can fit nogins to mount metal back boxes prior to fixing plaster board. Other than that use back boxes designed for plasterboard fitting.

    Can I get work certified

Do the work in close supervision with a spark that can approve the spec before you do the work, do the pre-change and post change tests and then notify? Might save a few pennies. Look out for borrowed neutrals. 😜

    Stage 2 insulation resistance test

Are you confusing IR testing a new circuit prior to attaching equipment sensitive to the 500v test with testing the attached appliance?

Dimming switch to change the light.??

Simple answer is yes … but dimmer needs to be compatible with the type of luminaire (lamp/bulb) as a dimmer that works an old fashioned high wattage bulb won’t work on an LED. It also gets more complicated with two way switching. Easily sorted by a competent person as, depending on how your...

Is this a Part P failure?

Sounds like your answering you’re own question. I’d be referring more to BS7671. Is this ‘builder’ a member of a scheme? How was the work notified? Leaving exposed live conductors!

Socket height regulation in old home

If the cable drops from the ceiling, just think how much cable you save by having them higher. Keep them lower if fed from below. 🤔😗😉

Socket height regulation in old home

Height only applies to current new builds so not necessary. If you are stripping out the whole house and having walls chased etc for new cables you might like to take a view on socket positions being at a more accessible height? I take it the current sockets aren’t in the middle of skirting and...
