    W2D3…. EV charging question

Even at my little three property holiday cottage business we're beginning to get competition for the charge point. Another one going in soon.

    Day 5 - The new Transit :-(

They didn't for a long time after '69, which is when I'm on about. The Riley Elf (and Wolseley Hornet) were upmarket, posh versions of the Mini, with the most obvious difference being that they had an extended body at the rear, forming a 'proper' boot. Other differences were a leather interior...

    Day 5 - The new Transit :-(

My first car was a Mini, which I built myself, using lots of parts from a written off Riley Elf, including the doors which had wind up windows.

What size SWA cable and what Distribution boards required to shed and garden office.

I've always tied on a second draw rope, attached to the first rope ahead of the knot to the cable.

UK Hot tub pump blowing fuse

And with a duff one, it just sits there, not knowing which way to turn, but drawing considerably more than its normal run current.

    External lighting and wiring requirements

Abandon the 230V lights idea, and go for low voltage stuff.

It's with regret I have to inform you, Christina (Sparkychick) has passed

Very sad news indeed. We all knew that this day would come, but hoped and expected that it wouldn't be for a while yet. My sincere condolences to her family and to all who knew her.

    Day 5 - The new Transit :-(

Fully agree! I've just bought what's probably the last 'new' car I shall ever buy. Built in 2004, and the last of the marque designed by engineers rather than accountants and 'stylists'. Has all the useful tech, without the nannying stuff.

What size SWA cable and what Distribution boards required to shed and garden office.

16mm2 3C SWA minimum. Saves the problem of upgrading the cable in the future, when plans change.

    Pir light circuit on 24/7

The existing wiring shows both brown wires into the same terminal. One should be in the terminal it is in now and the other in the terminal next to it (black wire). The cable going to the light is the one that should be moved. You show the two earth wires as being disconnected. They must be...

UK Hot tub pump blowing fuse

Also worth pulling the hose off of the end of the pump, so that you can see the rotor, check that it will turn, and ntjammed by debris.

Today I experienced the worst electric shock my career

VD only becomes a problem if the design of the circuit is poor and the size of the cables inadequate.

At what voltage should a 1.5V battery be replaced?

Quite often the problem is a poor contact between the battery and the terminals it connects to. The act of replacing the battery with a new one will likely improve the contact and fix the problem, but so would just removing and replacing the old one.

Day 2: Solar and Wind for Domestic Properties - is it worth doing either?

Looks like it's going to be for me. ECO4 flex stuff has all been approved, and an asbestos survey done earlier today.

    RCD trips

Changing the CU for a RCBO one won't do anything towards curing the fault, but it will greatly reduce the inconvenience when the fault occurs, since just the one circuit will turn off, and, of course will narrow down the fault to that circuit. If it's definitely rain related, then moisture is...

    Pirate's Rant#4 no. 2 of 1 a day

I do that to get my own back on the "backing into a carpark space brigade" who frequently annoy me by delaying me while they perform this manoeuvre. Just drive into a space, without holding anyone up, and back out afterwards when it's all clear to do so, without inconveniencing anyone.

Day 2: Solar and Wind for Domestic Properties - is it worth doing either?

I've always advised my customers against combi boilers, and have only ever fitted a handful where the customer insisted.

Electric Fire Install - Gas pipe consideration

Doesn't your stud detector have a metal detecting function? A metal detector should be able to trace the pipe up to a couple of inches into the wall. Watch the swarf while drilling. After the surface plaster, red swarf is good. It means you are drilling virgin brick and not a plastered filled...
