Today I experienced the worst electric shock my career

Possibly, but if I see that thing light up red, then I'm on my guard, and move it around a bit. If it still lights when close to a metal spike, then I'm not going to grab hold of that spike without checking further.

Relay for a car horn upgrade.

What's the trim level of your car? Is it one of the more basic ones? If so, it's possible that a higher spec of the same car would be fitted with twin horns, and the wiring for a second horn might already be there.

Today I experienced the worst electric shock my career

Volt stick always goes in before I do, but in this case there's a possibility that the fitting wasn't live at all until it was picked up and its wiring disturbed.

Running cable over / through garage blockwork

I doubt it. Assuming it's even double skinned with a cavity, I'd expect the inner leaf to be dense blocks. Lightweight blocks cost more.

Has my UK property had its 10 year inspection performed correctly?

PEX does indeed get chewed, possibly as a result of its installation methods. You'll find plenty of PEX passing through holes in joists (blocking the vermins' way), but it would be unusual to find conduit installed like this. I always use barrier PEX, rather than plain, in the totally...

    Immersion fuse or MCB?

Many date from about 30? years ago, when the government offered free insulation top ups for the lofts of pensioners. Many of those pensioners lived in bungalows which already had 4" - 6" of loft insulation, with all the power wiring lying on top of it. Now that insulation has another 6" on top...

    Immersion fuse or MCB?

I go back to a time when a 4W Wylex was a fairly standard installation, and the circuits would be 30A cooker, 30A 'ring' sockets, 15A immersion (seen some weird and wonderful spellings of that word inside the cover), and 5A lights. The water heater was always on a dedicated circuit. Any FCU or...

Has my UK property had its 10 year inspection performed correctly?

The metal conduit bit sounds a bit OTT. I've fitted miles of plastic conduit in vermin infested farm buildings over the years, and have never seen as much as a tooth mark in it. The whole risk from electrics is a bit overstated IMHO - wiring doesn't normally lie anywhere near the roof covering...

Bug Report: Displays 5 new tool threads on whats new page.

Don't know if it's relevant, an intentional change, or a different minor bug completely, but when clicking on "what's new", there's a small section, titled "5 Popular Electricians Tools Thread" that has recently appeared before the list of new posts. Laptop running Windows 10 and Chrome.

Emergency light not coming on, batteries or replacement lamps?

Unless they've been dead for years, a duff battery will usually illuminate the fitting for a few seconds at least, so, as a general rule, no illumination at all, then it's not (just) the battery that has failed.

Check the clearance between the back panel and/or terminal cover that you've removed. Look for small burn marks.

UK Main Earth and Gas Bond

Possibly the original installer was confused by the fact that it is permissible to bond more than one service with the same unbroken cable.

Good Morning Thread - Come say good morning, tell us what you've got on today. :)

Following on from the shenanigans of June 16th - 17th, my wife had an operation last Tuesday, and to celebrate her being able to eat normal food again, we went to our local pub for lunch yesterday. We were the only ones in there, as a result of the road between the pub and civilisation being...

Wiring a new 2 gang switch from a single two way switch.

"It works" and "it's safe" are not necessarily the same thing. With DIY work, they are often far from the same thing.

Has my UK property had its 10 year inspection performed correctly?

We test to the latest edition, and this is part of the latest edition "An installation which was designed to an earlier edition of the Regulations and which does not fully comply with the current edition is not necessarily unsafe for continued use, or requires upgrading. Only damage...

    Bonding gas and water

Even if the water supply is currently an extraneous conductive part, a plumber could possibly offer a more cost effective solution.

Distribution circuits in Section 705 location, RCD needed?

Regulations notwithstanding, the only thing in those pics that is likely to be affected by sheep is the trailing flexibles on the ground from the hook up points. In another life, I have shorn sheep, played midwife to sheep, de-tailed (and other things) sheep, performed chiropodist services on...
