Back to the topic, someone mentioned (above) about needing a cushion when you start. This is the hardest part. IMO once you start you keep customers and build but it's the start if you don't have a customer base. That could mean doing something you don't want but pays the bills or partner's...
For me, sole trader has been fine. I've been advised to go Ltd but I'll look at that next tax year.
As to the schemes, all universally despised it appears. I chose Stroma 'cos it saved £200 but councils will only accept NIC and most privateers are ERR..."what certificate"! Are you going to the...
My Tu'ppence worth.
Hi Nick,
Everybody's situation if different so feel free to use or ignore this suits you.
As Midwest said (above) what's your current employer situation? If you're permanent PAYE can I suggest an honest conversation with them. They may be able to sub work to you when you...
Solid gold advice; thank you. I'm going to make up a simple chart to give method and structure to testing for the next time. I'll let you know the result.
Exactly the error I think I've made if I'm honest.
RCD tested with the Megger. Introducing each circuit in sequence then 250v IR between each live at the board then each neutral (not 100% I had found every plugged in device). A sweep of sockets and switches. All this gave me the chandelier and...
Hi There,
I was called out to a house RCD trip which would not reset. An old style 10 way split board with a single 30 ma RCD (half without RCD protection).
RCD checks out fine but I found a faulty chandelier & replaced it with a single bulb for now. Also a faulty 12v transformer flickering; now...
The trouble is, they are nearly ALL bloody quiet. It's that air stuff moving about that makes all the racket. Hard to beat a loft mounted in-line unit IMHO.
This is the rock of the IET attitude meeting the hard place of customer price point. If anyone can think of a better method of promoting the unqualified multi-trader in his determination to go cheaper - get in and get out fast; personally I can't.
My apologies; a "preaching to the choir" moment...
That's the most sensible thing I've read in along time.
Due to my unparalleled ability to buy really crap homes surveyed by overpaid chimps, I had a lot of experience on how houses are put together long before I started on-site or at college; that became a useful asset in the real world. By...
OOOH! You mean the system the surveyor used on my house when we bought it. He managed to spot the roof on the porch was incorrect - it was fine. He missed the perfect electrics - T&E melted into the wall above the CCU. The clever bit is the layers of company responsibility when you chase their...
Hi Pete,
Tried both. The meter skips from test straight into the timer. Our 1720 comparison unit on 1/2 delta tested for 3 - 4 seconds then counted. Mine went straight to count. The 1720 then tripped on 1x and 5x delta. Mine just counted so it's going to Alpha.

Update on the poorly Megger.
Took it into Barking and Dagenham College (did my C&G there) They tested my MFT and leads on a college rig with a known good 1720. Definitely a faulty unit. The only question is whether I caused this switching between functions whilst powered? Don't know but...
Oh, sorry should have mentioned the obvious. Tested the same with the Megger leads in a breakout and the 1363 plug lead. Both could be faulty but unlikely. Also, when my test RCD failed I used it on all the house circuits but the timer just keeps counting up and eventually display "greater than...
G'd Evening Lads an' Lasses,
I've got a Megger 1730 MFT; lovely bit of kit normally. Ex-demo - not had a hard life and was calibrated about eight weeks ago. I normally run it over a Cal-Card and a captive test RCD about once a month and this time it failed to trip the 30ma RCD on 1x, 5x and...
Sat my Stroma CPS about a week ago. Went through past invoices and CIS payslips to confirm my time in the game. Checked insurances and CV very carefully. Probably about 80 questions (one a minute for an hour or so) Certainly no tea and biscuits walkover as is often implied. Not unpleasant just...
