I make you spot on - even with my limited experience of the market. Playing an honest game helps me; I do written quotes, carry a Sum-Up card payment device, do work I know to be good quality and (the hard part) walk away when the Spider Sense says "this one doesn't want to play nice"! Quoted...
The "washing the van" thing (usually accompanied by The Archers) was possibly a lucky break. Neighbours came past to wish me / us luck. They each took a couple of cards for for friends / their kids in new homes / work and I got a few jobs which built my early customer base from ERR...zero...
Apologies Murdoch, I noticed this and then missed answering. I started subbing in 2016 but 2018 was the start of totally independence so yet to "summer and winter" the business plan as my gardening friends would say. That why EF has been so valuable. It's not always about the work and answers...

Phones are the root cause of all sorts of social issues at this time. They are also a valuable tool; who of us would not have like to have one the first time we were on a site unsupervised, or take a quick look at the drawings we copied and are now lost on-site somewhere. Even so, the youngsters...
Posted that somewhat hesitantly. This is after all, a technician's forum. I've turned every one of these suggestion into a to-do list. Sound like most of you have hit the "you're on your own and it's up to you" point in business. You support and encouragement is appreciated - thank you.
Mods - this may be more suitable for The Leccy Arms but not sure if I have access so delete / move if unsuitable.
I've had a bit of a dry January. Not the "no beers" kind but, apart from one bathroom fit out, not a lot of work. Now I can fully understand that this is the world of feast 'n'...
I know nothing about SJ Hall's item for sale but I do have a Megger 1730 and, for me as my first MFT purchase, these 1730's are the dog's. You can download the manual as a PDF. Get yourself a set of Lightmates and a 20m earth wander lead and you'll have a really useful bit of kit. Hope this is...
NO...Never! No ol' man ranting allowed.
(Mumbles) Post tool tart with with torque wrench. I used me teeth :)
Seriously, the skills and confidence come with time, with repetition and with skinned knuckles. You have to feel for the tradesman trying to pack our teenage years of learnin' into a...
N-E faults are apiece of cake compared to baking the perfect wholemeal loaf. I think the trick is to knock back the dough mix for long enough; not sure if that fixes RCD issues!
Had to Google (other searches engines are available) that 'cos I'd never heard of them. There was one on Ebay for 250 quid - a screaming bargain if it does what you need. Even comes in a Fluke-style case, not the the annoying one that my (personally preferred) Megger is condemned to. Aside from...
The reason I had to go the very hard route of self employed. I don't mind making tea / load the van / clearing up BUT don't expect me to spend thousands in college fees, bring 30 years of home repair, a driver's licence and tools and learn nothing. I'm sure there are companies that would / could...
As said elsewhere, start with a good idea of what you want to do. Then eliminate anything in each of the manufacture 's range that does not do what you need. Research your prices and there is you reduce list of options. I made my final selection at the Electricians show but Test-Meter.Co. UK...
As a mature enthusiast looking for a new career I could not even get any of "equal opportunity" employers to return my calls. Eventually put myself through college and part P etc; an impossible task without family support. Two youngsters sitting on my class had been used a cheap improvers for...
A vote here for the alternative to MS Office - which really is Libre Office. Open office is fading and Libre Office is properly supported; it's only neg for me personally, was a slightly clunky interface. Down loaded as part of the Ubuntu operating system it's not perfect but hard to beat if you...
Interestingly, and prompted by Yozza's comment, I ran my Megger across a Cal-Card and a known RCD. The RCD test is similar but the IR and Continuity have both shifted, possibly due to the weather. Not a problem as long as you test regularly and are aware I guess.
When I fitted our new bathroom, the management simply simply used the showers at the gym for a week without complaint - take that as "she's a keeper" :)
Back to the thread, I do a lot of emergency call-outs (find the fault and make it safe / warm / light) so a full and occupied rewire looks, to...
A quick search suggests the Hagers are not as expensive as I expected. May pop into TLC and take a look although they don't have a branch usefully close to me.
