    Any recomendations for outdoor trunking?

The containment doesn't need to be IP rated, just needs to not deteriorate unduly in the sun/rain. I've only ever installed galv trunking indoors, but if it won't corrode then happy to use it here.

    Any recomendations for outdoor trunking?

I need some outside containment for about half a dozen or so unsightly cables run outdoor - a mix of black telephone, black security alarm, red (now faded to orange) fire alarm. These are all existing cables, and need tidying up and supporting properly (currently all tied to disintegrating...

Running cable over / through garage blockwork

Whenever I've installed electrics in a garage like this, I've mostly used round plastic conduit (20 or25mm) or surface trunking (typicallly 25x16mm) - with the appropriate surface boxes to suit the method. I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay to chase it in (well apart from one wealthy customer...

    Bus bar advice

The second photo is partly obscured, but enough to see this is a typical Volex board, where the RCD circuits are on the RH side, and the bus bar has to be split to separate them. They are normally cut nicely, not looking like someone bent the busbar back & forth to snap it! If the electrician...

    Bus bar advice

Perhaps show us a photo of the whole board. And what electrical work are you having done that involves the consumer unit?

Are at home Level 2 courses actually viable?

Reasearch carefully any training provider before signing up. There are some out there that don't deliver, and even appear to set obstacles to progressing (such as assessements that you repeatedly fail without understanding why). There are also some that sign you up with a credit provider, so...

Replacing storage/24hr heating/off peak water consumer units

If two tariffs are sufficient, and you don't need too many ways, you can easily add an SPD kit to the Fusebox F2014DT dual tariff board. The only snag is the kit eats up two ways (SPD, and associated MCB).

    Strange reminder thing.

Most threads jump to the "Similar Threads" box below, it has been like that for some days now. Also the Blue buttons (New Posts, Post Reply) aren't active unless I scroll them at least 1/4 the way up the page.

Electric shower Circuit breaker not working

This looks like a voltage operated earth leakage circuit breaker, now obsolete, Unless there is some other circuit breaker installed after it, then it is not going to trip on overcurrent, and so there is no suitable overcurrent protection for the shower circuit, in fact a fault might blow your...

Legal question regarding overhead service line

So when the cable accidentally snags on the tank (even when you think it is clear) snaps and the live end drops onto the metal truck, and the driver gets out to see what happens, and his body completes the circuit to ground, ... how are you going to explain that in court?

Hi there, any chance you could......

But having the builder pay you might be a tad less reliable than having the end customer pay you directly!

    What is this 1970s fuseboard?

As above, Crabtree circuit breakers, the values for each circuit are marked on the ends of the levers. The photo shows the ON & OFF positions. Nothing to pull out or plug in! You can see there are three 30A circuits (typically cooker & 2 socket circuits), one 15A circuit (typically immersion...

Distance between meter and cut out

Looks like you have a good excuse to not have a smart meter!

    TT or PME?

Where does the E cable from the cut-out go? Possibly it joins the outgoing SWA from the switch fuse to the house, e.g. if the SWA is only 2-core. Possibly it is bonding to somewhere. I don't think you can make any assumptions.

    Trainees, Show Us Your Installs

The holes in Fusebox housings are a little large for the range of screws I typically use (no 8's) so I add washers to avoid the risk of the screw pulling through - but not penny washers, ones that sit into the recesses.

    Ceramic hob partially working

Yes! I would expect both L1 (black) & L2 (brown) to be connected for everything to work! Usually there are connection diagrams for different supplies (e.g. if you have 2 or 3 phases, as common in some countries).

    electric sign off

Typically Building Control will accept an EICR (electrical installation condition report) which is the outcome of a test & inspection of the installation.

    UK Meter box too congested!

While a new larger box would be ideal, if there was just one set of tails exiting the meter it should be OK. So instead of having the Henley blocks and other stuff added for the car chargers, move it all to the other side of the wall? Split the tails for the chargers inside, with the current...
