Are company's sparks rates to low.

Having worked for 'the man' for 18 years, I jumped to self employed in Dec 2021. Not looked back so far. Only real observation I have from comparing my jumping to one of my other mates, is I went in with someone as a business partner and they didn't. It feels like we're able to rattle work off...

My Nissan 'easy to steal from' Townstar EV

I wouldn't rely on the ghost immobiliser on its own. My hire vans had them fitted, we lost a key and had a guy come out to cut and programme a new one. He just went behind the glove box, disconnected an earth wire and it was completely disabled. He cloned the master key, reconnected and off he went.

    Pricing and Timing

I thought 20% was a pretty fair mark up in materials, but recently a chap I got to know made me think again. On the flip side, I've tried to convince him his hourly rate is way too low, £25-35 depending on how far he has to drive. On small items he's doing a 100% markup and on bigger ticket...

    First ever eicr report failed

Not sure on the EICR report entitlement or not, but I know an EIC or minor works certificate only has to go to the person requesting the works.

Communal DB does it require RCD protection to be a sat EICR

Isn't C3's only on a an EICR a satisfactory rating anyways?

SY cable on EICR again ....

Depending on the size of the company, ie, has a H&S department or H&S. I'd just use the phrase that's it's not compliant with BS standards and insurance would likely not cover any incident arising from its failure. Whether that 2nd part of the statement is true or not I wouldn't know. But it may...

Switching between phases depending on live health

I can't say I've ever seen a piece of equipment that would let you select different phase combinations like required. Best I could think of is repurpose a mechanical change over switch, but that would only let you create 2 of the 3 phase combinations you want to use. Only ever seen a 2 way...

    Voltage spike causing strange readings?

Glad to see a happy ending. A strong sneeze would knacker a PIR, they seem to be sensitive to everything. Small single phase motors rarely survive a 400v blast either, but then neither would I 😂

    UK RCD tripping explanation

Reference to finding the fault. If you had nothing but a screwdriver to fault find, first job on a split board would be to try and identify the circuit to blame if the RCD has tripped. For a bog standard fault the below would be an indicator. By bog standard I mean a piece of load equipment is...

I often fit cables made from plastics and a piece of glass thinner than a human hair, I still have to fire clip 🤷‍♂️

UK Backup 106A generator earthing arrangement questions

Better/Smart/intelligent/expensive generators require two earth spikes set ~10-15m apart. They check the resistance between spikes and will automatically disconnect the supply if there is an issue. For this to work properly, you need to be in 'island' mode with a generator switch over point...

    Emergancy work flow

Probably find domestics just want phone advice for free, not actually want a visit in the middle of the night. Unless I could smell smoke or see flames, that's a future me problem for the morning

    UK Looking for advice

Reference tools, buy cheap, cry twice, usually... Now and again, a chineseium tool surprises you and is actually good. Certain items I buy the no brand, and as cheap as possible, as the 15 lads I have don't treat them as their own or we're working in a place we're the tenants have sticky...

    Rammed metal trunking

No mate, it was more out of curiosity than anything else. I see plenty in the high rise blocks that we fibre up that makes me cringe. See plenty of the same trunking with coax etc running in with the power too. My client would rip me apart for putting the fibre in the same way as some of these...

    Rammed metal trunking

Hi all After some opinions from a job I did previously. I was installing fibre into the existing trunking, and not touching the electrics. It was a 16 floor council block with 4 risers on each landing. Made up of 2x1 framing and MDF boards with firestop board screwed to the back of them. Rough...

ELCB or RCD for instant tankless shower water heaters?

RCD it up for the effort it would take I would suggest. Look at the EV fiasco starting to take shape where no RCDs have been fitted and now warranties are being refused.

    Boiler in bathroom/Carbon Monoxide detector

Unfortunately my boiler is in the bathroom. Whoever had the house before me did some DIY frame and doors. Fortunately it meant I could fit a battery powered detector at the very top opposite the boiler wall.
