Not DIY advice. How often do pros work live?

Thats right.... The cable and installation method doesnt warrant having an RCD, if the outgoing final circuits are covered.... However their "showing off" or just laziness to not isolate the board they were working on doesnt make them appear very professional

    Consumer unit

The only problem I can see is someone has taken the front cover off šŸ˜ I wouldnā€™t even say this is untidyā€¦ about the normal standard really. If anything, there appears to be a badly terminated armoured cable coming in the bottom. The black core of that, I think, is terminated into the earth...

Come on, @Dan , i'm sure youve picked up enough from us professionals to know ;) In the OP's case, if theyve been poking about in a consumer unit, they may not have had the benefit of any RCD protection if theyve been on the supply side.... Nothing but the main supplier fuse, which, in...

What pets do you have, and what pets have you had?

A little sad news of my mother in laws little doggy. 9 or 10 year old mini schnauzer, a bit daft, and a few strange little quirks. Didnā€™t like hard floors, didnā€™t like walks, didnā€™t like toys, and hardly ateā€¦. We had quite heavy wind last night, and she was out in the garden at homeā€¦...

    Air pump for camping

Thanks, P. Iā€™m trying to make my Caravanning holidays less stressful as well as less physicalā€¦. Itā€™s the hand pump that came with the awning, and honestly thought it would be up to the job. Iā€™ve seen some cheap things on Amazon, and Iā€™ll have a look at our local outdoor leisure shop and see...

What do I do with this? (192? home)

Not sure with American wiring, one for @Megawatt i think. There was a time in the UK that there wasnā€™t earth or ground wires in lighting circuits, and the way we see it, if itā€™s a plastic or ā€œdouble insulatedā€ fitting, then itā€™s ok to put upā€¦. Wholly metallic fittings, where a loose cable...

certainly showing off.... They'd think twice if a customer saw them actually getting a shock, or creating a bang with a careless screwdriver drop

Not DIY advice. How often do pros work live?

It is drilled into all of us during training that there should be no live work whatsoever. If the power has to go off, it has to go off... no if's, but's, or maybe's You were already prepared for a generator, and i wouldnt see it being off for more than an hour anyway. They had no good reason...

The client is always right... after some advice.

Sorry... i misread. If customer has undone what you have done, its time to have a word. Tell him you cant test it if its been "tampered" with, basically. They might actually understand.... and stop messing until youre finished

Good Morning Thread - Come say good morning, tell us what you've got on today. :)

you're going to beep a lot walking through the metal detector with all that in your pockets. I once worked at the Army base North of Arbroath, and one day they were high on the security and checked every car going in and out. Opened my boot, and there's a box with wires hanging out of it...

Test it as you leave it, but keep a note for yourself about the bathroom lights. (Photo would do)ā€¦.. and anything else. If customer makes a mess of it afterwards, then they might ask you back to repairā€¦.then charge them a generous hourly rate. LAP fittings are generally OK. IP and fire...

    Air pump for camping

You may have read elsewhere that I managed to break the hand pump for my inflatable awning for my caravan, so Iā€™m currently looking for an electric equivalent. However, im looking to see if I can find a pump that will do the awning (low pressure) and double up as an emergency tyre inflater...

What makes it a lack of space? Iā€™d say to the customer to dismantle a cupboard or whatever to creat the space you need for the extra equipment. Trip over to York from Scarborough today so wife could visit and old school friend, and I could browse through a second hand Lego shop. Got lunch at the local Tesco Now normally, I drink Coke, not Pepsiā€¦. Full fat, not zero sugar and nothing coloured strangelyā€¦ but today I thought I might try...
