This is a baffling fault I've been fighting with for a couple of weeks now, so I wondered if another set of eyes will help.
I installed an EV Charger a few weeks back, and all went well for a while, then the client called me to say it wasn't charging randomly. Resetting it brought it back to...
I think this is the right place to post.
Up until now I've steared clear of installing EV Chargers, mainly because as a Self Employed Sparky I've not been able to compete with the national companies. However I'm getting enquiries from my client base asking to install EV Chargers, so I'm going...
Hi,
Ignoring the appauling conductor terminations which I found, in the background of the photo you can see a really odd neutral tail terminated into the main switch.
I've never seen this before, has anyone else, and if so what is it ? Oh I should add this is at a flat, so the tails are...
Just wanted to know which people use.
My case.
Client converting attached garage into new rooms. Consumer Unit has to move to accomodate this and will be greater than 3m from meter. Void above garage is used to route cables to main house so can use this to route cable for extension to tails...
Just to end. Fault was indeed a cable, and it was the last section from the last socket in the extension back to the board...almost entirely severed, how im still unsure. Client wants me to now do a full inspection of the property.
Sorry, my bad, I meant these were N-L values.
Moved on considerably now. Have mapped out the faulty ring, and have isolated the section with bad cabling (and it is a bad cable) - and guess what...it's in the wiring of the extension, built 2 years ago with no EIC or any other paperwork! The...
Just an observation, but you are aware as a non-spark you're not supposed to be working on a consumer unit ? If something went wrong and traced back to the CU your house insurance company could have an issue with it, let alone buildings control as its notifiable work - Just an observation, I'm...
So, an update. No continuity found on CPC, Neutral normal, Line 700 Ohms when measuring continuity. IR reading on Line 3MOhms, Neutral >2000MOhms. After quite a bit of work got IR on Line up to 600MOhms, but continuity still 700 Ohms, but both MCB and RCD now trip when only the MCB did before...
Thanks for the responses. I'll check the appliances etc first as usual then, if that doesnt show an issue ill do an IR on the circuit. If it is a damaged cable i just hope its somewhere i can get to or bypass
Can i just check something. If a rat decides to chew a cable will it trip the MCB or RCD ?
I ask because I had one house recently that had a randomly tripping MCB and it turned out to be a chewed cable. I was surprised as i would have thought it would trip the RCD but it never did. A chewed...
After fixing a few CPC related issues on a ring final I got the following results
L-L = 0.47
N-N = 0.47
CPC-CPC = 0.69
R1+R2 Tested at 0.31
R1+Rn Tested at 0.25
All looks good, until that is I realised that the CPC-CPC is actually not quite right. It should be 0.78 (0.47 x 1.67 for a 2.5/1.5...
Basically I'm going to have to use the self adhesive D_Trunking, and screw metal clips inside them, but ensure any hole I drill or screw I use doesn't penetrate any deeper than the drywall. Now I know the thickness of the drywall from being able to measure it elsewhere. Hate discovering there's...
An odd question granted but bear with me.
I've got to extend a radial circuit in a community centre to fit a new hand dryer in the toilets, but I have two restrictions.
1. It's a listed building so I'm not allowed to damage the walls in any way.
2. Even if I could, I've been told there is...
Looks like the KT63DL has an auto null facility for continuity. Never noticed this before, perhaps something was done at Kewtech during its calibration. Oh well good to know i suppose
Hi,
My Kewtech KT63DL has just come back from its annual calibration without any issues, but Ive just taken it to site and attempted to do the usual nulling of the leads before doing a continuity test and they keep coming back as 0 ohms which they didnt used to do. Normally i had to null them. I...
Hi. I'm being tasked with installing an electric shower into a property that was built back in the 1980's. The main consumer unit has only 4 ways and is protected by an RCD, and is fully populated and in a very tight space under their stairs. However one of the MCB's is currently used to feed...
I know there are many MFT's out there which can test SPD's, but they all cost thousands of pounds, and I personally can't justify that cost which currently isn't mandated.
However it would be nice to know that when I install a SPD that it will function.
Is there a way of testing such a device...
Client. But we've finally located the fault, and it was one of those "Hang on - what's this?" moments. I won't go into details but I suddenly realised that even though all my tests were coming up ok, the conductors in the sockets were not the same. That's to say in one socket it was 2.5mm T&E...
