Best 8-CORE cable for outdoor use and immersion

This may be a stupid question but without the colour coding on the cables how do I tell them apart?

Best 8-CORE cable for outdoor use and immersion

Qualified electrician here but doing some DIY with regards to moving our intercom from the front door to our new driveway gates. Is there a particular, more rugged type of 8-core you can by that is okay with immersion in water etc. Our builders positioned flexible conduit in strategic positions...

Zs for a CU with sub main and fused isolator

When you say distribution circuit are you referring to the sub-main?

Zs for a CU with sub main and fused isolator

Setup: Consumer unit fed via sub main from a 60A fused isolator switch. This is connected to the service head MET via a 2m earth connection. How would one go about both calculating and documenting the Zs? Would you be treating the fused isolator switch as it’s own db and therefore be...

Door entry with two means of access

We are using a Bell BL106-4 on the main door. Code entry to open the door, buzzers for each flat. Simple. Only now we want to add access control to a metal gate at the end of a path a mete 10m away. Am I best off adding another Bell BL106-4 at the gate and wiring in-line or is there a smarter...

    3 phase domestic supply

In London, I was quoted 12k by UKPN for a straight 10m run from the pavement to our front door. That didn’t include any ground works on our side. Go figure.

    SWA metal exposed on main

I’m having a new wall constructed. Whilst digging the foundations the workers came across the incoming main. Note that the steel armour is entirely exposed. U.K. power came to confirm it was their cable but didn’t mention anything relating to the cables condition. Surely this is a ticking time...

    16mm twin and earth grommet

Does this look the same to you? Difficult to tell when screwfix quote 16mm whether they mean the cable or conductor. British General Plastic Gland Kit 10-16mm² Flat Cable - https://www.screwfix.com/p/british-general-plastic-gland-kit-10-16mm-flat-cable/3442p

Why do we use cartridge fuses and not MCBs?

A customer asked me this today and I couldn't answer. Why, in LARGE switched fuses (60-100amp) do manufacturers use cartridge fuses and not MCBs?

    Terminating SWA into Hager CU

This I did not know. Thank you!

    Terminating SWA into Hager CU

Good suggestions. Just feels wrong to be having to drill my own holes into the CU. Can't understand why Hager wouldn't include knockouts for SWA given how common the setup is in the UK?

    Terminating SWA into Hager CU

How would one terminate SWA into a Hager consumer unit given all of the knockouts are rectangular? They don't appear to make any form of gland. Feels like a crap finish to just leave it hanging in the back?

    ICP/IDNO Recommendation in London

Thanks. I've had an IDNO state that there is a scheme by which they can do the work and then 'sell' the infrastructure asset back to the DNO claiming almost a rebate? So a 20k job might after the sale cost me 10k. Anyone come across this before?

    5 Meters, 5 suppliers...

How would one manage the re-location of five meters owned by five different energy companies during a mains supply upgrade? The old supply will be disconnected at the same time the new is energised. All five meters will need to move to a new location approx 1 meter away. What is the best way...

    ICP/IDNO Recommendation in London

Ended up emailing pretty much the entire Lloyds list. Many who won't do single connections but two who have so far expressed interest in quoting. UK Power wants around £12.5K to disconnect existing and run a new 200a three-phase service 10m. This doesn't include laying the duct or digging the...

    ICP/IDNO Recommendation in London

I am looking to have a new 3 phase 200amp supply run to a house/flats conversion that is currently running off a single phase 80amp supply. UK power has confirmed there is a cable at our boundary that can be tapped and provided quotes. It is about as simple a cable run as you can get, around 5m...

    Earth bonding metal balcony

Last year I had a large cast-iron balcony constructed with steps down into my garden. The balcony is bolted into the walls and also into the pavement where it meets the garden. Is there a requirement to earth this? If so, should it be a separate 10mm CPC direct to the CU or could I link it to...
