I suggest getting a "proper" domain name rather than using hotmail.com and (as AndyB suggests) a virtual landline if you have a half decent broadband service, mine costs only £2.40 per month.
Good Luck
I didn't have any luck trying to upgrade mine, it seemed to be a communication error, I suspect it was because I was using windows 10 (I tried on two computers - a laptop with a usb/serial adapter lead and a desktop with serial port), but before I got round to trying it on a XP computer it was...

I've used something similar to stop my mother-in-laws Carers from unplugging some items.
The limit is not how many sockets, but how many handsets, there is a maximum "Ring Equivalent Number" (REN) of 4 on a BT line.
Modern handsets can have a REN number of less than 1, the telephone handset normally has the REN number on the base.

Just coming to the end of a complete rewire of my house (1964 traditional three bed semi) removing all the VIR cable that was disintegrating.

But it would be nice to...

Depends what you need to know or what you are trying to do, (e.g. a repair/problem or add an extension, domestic or commercial PBX )
Explain a bit more and I'm sure someone can help.
