Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

I remember my nan having that set up as well...What sockets she had on the walls (one per room IIRC) were all the old round pin... I think some might have been only for 2 pin plugs as well?

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

Not even sure there is a cable still inside the trunking or whether it was recovered when the hot water tank was removed...If it is there, and providing its not been cut off at the CU, it would certainly make the job a lot easier...

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

Another quick question...When I get this done, what paperwork would a legit Spark leave me re testing and inspection?

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

Locating the socket behind the TV set on the wall should make the job a bit easier as it could be fished down behind the plaster board without needing to worry about any cross studding, but still would not be happy to run it off the lighting circuit. There is a redundant feed for a now non...

    Are Socket Testers Worthwhile?

Do I detect a note of sarcasm in the that reply?

    Are Socket Testers Worthwhile?

Another thread mentioned those plug in socket testers that use three or four LEDs to indicate wiring faults on the socket... Just wondering if these have any real value especially on a ring main? I can't see that they would pick up a continuity issue unless say both 1/c and o/g cables were...

Thoughts on that big carpark fire in Liverpool

    Pierre Billotte springs to mind...

Rather High Ze with all the bonding in place

If there was an issue with the earth coming from the DNO lead sheath, what would the DNO do, convert the supply to TN-C-S or is it more complex for them than that?

    Do Stud Detectors Work???

One of the most vivid memories of my childhood was a council worker sticking a pick into the back boiler while supposedly removing the fire grate. It wasn't so much the accident that sticks out but the language used by my dear old mum as she chased the pair of incompetents out of the house!:)

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

Truthfully, no, just the chap mentioned and I was just taken aback by his suggestion...On reflection, I really don't believe he is anymore qualified than I am, and is probably just somebody who think that they "knows a bit"... Once I am ready for the work I will get out a couple of people for...

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

No sockets on the other side of the wall as it backs onto the stair well and it would be a long run to chase it out it horizontally with a doorway to take into consideration... No, unless an electrician can come up with a fiendishly devilish idea, I suspect the floor boards will need to come...

I agree...plus why pay for a cowboy when I can bodge with the best of them and for free!:D

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

I think that discussion would warrant thread on its own..Its also why before having any tradesman in to do any work, I like to have some knowledge of the area concerned so I can make informed decisions...

    Do Stud Detectors Work???

Just curious, but how do they detect wooden studs? Are the actually picking up the associated nails ect in them?

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

Nearer the time, that's what I would do, but apart from using surface truncking which I don't really want, I think I am going to need to bite the bullet and get it done properly...Edit to add I am not 100% sure but the "obvious" sub floor cable route would mean the cable going through the...

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

I was fully expecting that answer but just wanted to make sure from a proper professional so to speak. From my own limited knowledge, the proper solution is going to be either a spur off an existing power socket that's already in the bedroom or even better, extending the ring...Its one of...

Bad Advice From A "Spark" ???

I would like an additional electric socket put in the bedroom to do away with the need for an extension cable. Its not an urgent job and its something I have put off getting done due to the hassle factor of having to lift laminate and floor boards, not to mention emptying the bedroom of...

What is this and is it normal? Council electrics

Really? So you can do work "as rough as" and if a customer complains, you just tell them your lucky not to be living on the streets? Step daughter moved into a council property and it was terrible the state she was expected to live in..They had supposedly carried out renovation and the work was...

    Do Stud Detectors Work???

Had one of these years ago, and it was pretty worthless. It seemed to give some indication of buried pipe work, but only if it was relatively shallow...I never did get it to work on wooden studs under plasterboard... So have they improved or still a just a gimmick?

any of you lot in the 170th royal engineers reserves?

I did 11 years in the TA, both Infantry and Cavalry...I would recommend it to anyone, but I would not go into a specialist Unit that was essentially a continuation of my day job...I joined to do something "different" if that makes sense. Was reading else where on here that members of the...
