Do Stud Detectors Work???

Had one of these years ago, and it was pretty worthless. It seemed to give some indication of buried pipe work, but only if it was relatively shallow...I never did get it to work on wooden studs under plasterboard...

So have they improved or still a just a gimmick?

Mine is the bosch, hit and miss, works a lot better finding metalic items, cables, pipes etc.

But cant rely on it for wood

I have a Velleman one and it worked on finding wooden plinths above my sons bedroom ceiling.

Just curious, but how do they detect wooden studs? Are the actually picking up the associated nails ect in them?

Its a density thing. You have a dial for 'stud' and another dial for 'metal' & 'voltage'
Flick the switch onto 'stud', put the detector against the ceiling where you thing there isn't a joist and set the dial so the lights are not activated. Then just move the detector slowly until the lights/beeper sounds. Mark the point.
Then start again from the other side of the joist and mark that point. The middle of the points should be the centre of your joist.
Test with a very small hole.

One of the most vivid memories of my childhood was a council worker sticking a pick into the back boiler while supposedly removing the fire grate.

It wasn't so much the accident that sticks out but the language used by my dear old mum as she chased the pair of incompetents out of the house!

Buy one for 5 quid off e bay
And it won't be reliable
How ever better quality ones do work.

errrrr but you can see where the stud is about 6" further up or am I missing something?
