In a lovely old pump room [may share photos in another post if anyones interested as it's generally in excellent condition]. Lighting still wired in VIR singles. More recently someone has spliced in with harmonised singles to supply a row of T5 flourescents in an adjacent building...see the...

Type of cable - how old is this cable do you think?

I removed some last year from a site built in 1963 - I don't think it was Crompton, Volex rings a bell. Still have some runs of VIR singles in galv conduit at same site (the type wrapped in a hessian type braid - not the kind used on lighting pendants). Generally in very good working order and...

UK Advice on this old CU?.

The "rails" holding the horizontals look suspiciously like dexion racking

    Some old equipment

Seen those 15a sockets. Incredibly over engineered. Certainly worth saving for interests sake

RCD fused spur suitable or not?

Surely to avoid all the debacle, a simple DP RCD or RCBO in a small enclosure to replace the FCU (assuming 16a protection at board) would be ideal? Thsi can then happily supply the relevant outlet.

    Wagos in trunking

It's an interestring point. However, "devils advocat" - it's possible to remove the grille of a 600x600 flouresent (and most 4ft and 5ft's) to access live terminals. Eithert by undoing a knurled screw on the 4/5ft's, or simply sliding the diffuser out on a 600x600....

    Found this beauty today

I have the corresponding break glass. Huge great thing. This was installed in 1963. I have a number of the grey bells too. This was before removal. Once removed I polished it up and it looks amazing - a nice bright red

Went back to said lamp post today. Also decided to look in the next one along. Not sure why and sort of wish I hadn't

I imagine it's the original one! Cutout was BICC as is all the cable, all installed on 1963. Remains of that antique fuse is retained with my small collection of "antique bits"

Another little one from me (but worth a mention). Old lamp column. BS1361 fuse clearly failed / lost an end cap at some point. Fuse wire wrapped around the old one.(NB I did replace with the correct fuse)

    MK to discontinue comsumer units

Personally I've been unimrpessed with Mk for a number of years now. I used to buy SafetyPlugs for some jobs, but on two of them the terminal screws sheared off whilst doing up. The boards seemed to get a bit flimsy. And the sockets irritate me - I find the terminal screws a bit too small and a...

    Interesting Cable Size?

Haha thanks Wilko - that's all this is - just for fun! Indeedidoo - definitley a post 1970 cable. I'm inclined to think it's nearer the 1970's / 1980's end of "modern" purely by the fact it has no writing whatsoever on the cable itself (I tend to find older 'modern' flexes have no BS numbers or...
