Are there any autistic electricians here?

It's impossible to give advice not knowing how severe and what his problems are. If stress is a problem then domestic work is less appealing than commercial. If noise is a greater problem then it would be vice versa, but ear plugs etc might be the solution. If he tends to repetitive behaviour...

    Something I haven’t seen before

These were a really bad idea, but the same tech is found in electric blankets, and heating mats for seed germination and home brewing, all of which I've used in the past. They'd probably still be good as heating mats: have you thought about selling them on eBay or Gumtree for greenhouses?

    10mA RCD for bathroom circuits

Forget protection, just don't go there!

New consumer unit, builder says upgrade supply

I needed to move a board recently, and needed to get the DNO (Western Power) to move the supply and fuse. They also moved the meter, but sheared the head off a screw holding the tails, so I had to contact the electricity supplier/billing company (SSE) to replace the meter. So the DNO can move a...

Knows my stuff...its safe because it works

You beat me to it! I was going to say a couple of choc boxes and a few cable clips is all it needs. Am I being too fussy?

When testing a circuit protected by RCBO, do you test at the DB or furtherst point

Guidance Note 3 Section 2.6.19 says testing should be at the load side of the RCD, with loads disconnected. I always strive to test at the furthest point on a circuit, as Zs is critical to correct operation, and even correct type of RCD (see Section 411). What is the point of Table 41.3 if...

New circuits wired into a plastic consumer unit

When plastic DBs came our they were touted as safer (no exposed metal) and more durable (don't rust). I found this acceptable then and still do. Here's a metal one that was in use till last Friday, not a good advert for metal boxes! I have a plastic one in my home and won't be changing it unless...

    RCBO tripping next door RCBO

A common problem when installing RCBOs where previously there were only RCDs is "borrowed" or common neutrals. I would suggest checking for continuity of neutrals in different circuits, after disconnecting from DB.

Shower 8.5 on a 40mcb is it dangerous

I confess that finding faults in electrical installations has been a favourite pass-time of mine for over 30 years! I agree entirely with the BS though: I've heard some lame excuses, and had my work criticised by many who should know better. It is a nuisance having to explain or pull out the...

Shower 8.5 on a 40mcb is it dangerous

I have exactly the same in my house, since upgrading my shower 7 years ago, with no problems, and will be fitting another to the same specification soon. One factor no-one has mentioned is circuit length. I believe a maximum of 10m (33') before a larger cable is required. If voltage at supply is...

Where are you getting your metal buckle clips

I think it says it is appropriate to use metal clips anywhere, but only required for FP where the cable retains its integrity in a fire i.e. won't melt.

Metal all the way, no brainer

Anyone watching Counterpart? This looks just like the meltdown that caused a rift in the space-time continuum! I am in the process of replacing a metal CU that is a shining example of why plastic boxes were introduced, I'll post a picture as soon as I can.

    Does this require Main Bonding?

Ask yourself are you winging it to save time and money, or are you playing it safe? It's always worth asking yourself this question. On the one side you can maximise your profits, on the other you stay out of court for manslaughter.

Can't seem to find the answer, 18th edition tommorow ; )

Be careful with table 43.1: I'm pretty certain the value for k is 115, and answer is 3.67.

Is 50 too old for a new career?

I would say it is definitely possible, but not easy. It very much depends on your qualifications and experience. I started commercial work at age 53, but got 17th Edition, C&G 2391 10 years previously, had 30 years experience of DIY and studied IT & Electronics to degree level. I'm ace at fault...

    Two showers off one supply

I have experienced a similar set-up with two showers in one house. I thought a split board with each shower on a separate RCD would be OK. Now have power for both, but still not enough water pressure. So you may not need a switch: if someone tries to use the second shower while the first is in...

    Highest paying specialty?

100k is achievable but you'll have to work long hours and usually far from home. This summer I was offered work on Tottenham football stadium at £2400 per week, but that required working 12 hours a day and 7 days a week. So £100k+ is achievable, but not sustainable. firstly you will burn out...
