    One string or two?

Yes, you're right of course! I think the best solution then is to wire them exactly as before. Though it will be pointless using an isolator at the panel end because it's too high up on the inside of the roof to be of any use. I want to bring just one pair of cables down from the roof to...

    One string or two?

Do you think it's better that way, or isn't it more obvious to the end user that a fault exists if there is no generation at all?

    One string or two?

Although they were wired in two strings originally, they were connected in the isolator to a two core swa so in fact only wired back to the inverter as one. I think therefore there'll be no problems with the inverter taking the voltage.

    One string or two?

I'm relocating a 16 panel system from a field onto a barn roof. Currently, there are 16 panels, wired as two strings into an isolator. From the isolator there is a two core 4mm SWA which goes underground (about 150m) to the inverter in the farmhouse where it's wired into one of the inverter's...

    SWA in drain permissable?

I'd be tempted to break out the concrete one side of that drain, lay the swa in some plastic ducting, then concrete over. You may find that existing concrete breaks out really easily, and at least then the cable can be withdrawn/replaced easily in the future.

OUT, the sooner the better, without paying them a penny more!

New sub board for shed swa advice.

Ah, but some trades like to use 100mm screws when a 20 is all that's required ;-) I once had a fault while testing a new installation, turned out to be the fault of the plasterers who picked up the Paslode and fired 50mm brads into my cables while fixing edge bead.

New sub board for shed swa advice.

That's what I thought, so instead of the scenario I suggested you'd use a plastic enclosure for the swa instead of metal, and boot over the swa gland so no exposed metal is left? (lets leave the 1667 ohm TT topic for another day, sometimes it's impossible to achieve below 200 when your...

New sub board for shed swa advice.

So you may end up with a metal consumer unit connected to a TT arrangement with a Zs of up to 1667 ohms for example, fitted adjacent to a metal adaptable box to which the swa is terminated with a Zs of perhaps .35 ohms. Is that right?

New sub board for shed swa advice.

So are you suggesting that the swa would need to be terminated in a separate enclosure before entering a metal consumer unit ( TT earthed) in an outbuilding for example?

New sub board for shed swa advice.

Does this statement suggest that it can be connected to whatever earthing arrangement exists at the origin OR alternatively, connected to a separate earthing arrangement at the load end?

    Indicator switch with no neutral?

Hi marconi, the client has been away so I've only recently been able to discuss the options with him. He has decided to leave things as they are for now, and hopes that the new brighter LED lamps I've put in his outside lights will make it more obvious if/when they are inadvertently left on. I'm...

    Indicator switch with no neutral?

Thanks, I'll give this a go. I was hoping to get this LED into the MK grid module ( Which I'd bought to do the job before realising the lack of neutral) but I think that may prove impossible. I'm wondering how neatly the led can be installed into part of the switch backplate, has anyone else...

    Indicator switch with no neutral?

I have a similar situation whereby I need to light an indicator lamp when the outside lights are left on. Problem is, the outside lights comprise of 2 x 5w GU10's. I assume this means passing the wire through the hole around 18 times, is that correct, and doable with a 1mm cable?

Something else to disconnect before testing...

Very soon someone will discover that all this WiFi buzzing around our ears is causing cancer and early onset dementia so wifi routers and repeaters will all be banned. I've wrapped my own house in tin foil and hard wired cat5 to all rooms. Her indoors is wondering why her mobile phone signal is...

18th Edition cash cow for the IET

I suppose the maximum fine for speeding is £2500, but I don't know anyone who's ever had to pay that. There's always that little element of risk but it makes life more exciting :-) Looking at that particular wording it seems that the spark may not be liable at all, with all the onus on the...

18th Edition cash cow for the IET

I've never been part of any scam/scheme. And you're right, because no one has ever come after me! Most of my work has been single new builds and renovation projects where Building control are already involved. I say to them that I'm fully qualified, are they happy for me to do the work? They...

    MK time delayed rcd's?

I asked my wholesaler for one today only to be told they're discontinued. A quick google of MK 6400s seems to confirm this. Does anyone know why this is and if Mk are producing a new version for some reason?
