    My builder.com work...

Yes I've used MyBuilder in the past. Got a small job to look at wiring in a garage - client was so happy I ended up re-wiring one detached property (new CU) and re-wiring two semi-detached properties (both with new CUs). So the leads can take unexpected directions. Otherwise steady stream of...

To re-wire? Or not to re-wire?

I'd suggest a re-wire to address all the issues you've raised. Certainly a new cu at least.

Asked to provide an Electrical Installation Certificate after 2 years as a statement of safety

Actually it was the kitchen company that engaged my services and I gave them the certificate to pass to the client - that's how they worked - so they wouldn't pass on the cert unless they got full and final settlement....

Asked to provide an Electrical Installation Certificate after 2 years as a statement of safety

You could always CYA more and put 'COPY OF EIC, TAKEN ON ??/??/??' and put the original date on. Yeah, that's what I did.. I recall turning up on day 1 to find the kitchen men had been in and stripped out the old units and work-tops leaving cables, sockets and FCUs dangling in the breeze. Job...

Asked to provide an Electrical Installation Certificate after 2 years as a statement of safety

Hi all, I've been asked to provide an EIC some two years after the work was completed. I did a cert at the time but the client claimed not to have received it. He now wants a guarantee of electrical safety. OK so no problem getting a copy of the cert. It was a paper version but even so, I did a...

How to trace a break in a cable? In a wall!

You'd need to test the Insulation Resistance (IR) of the cable. That will show whether there is damage to the Line, Neutral and/or cpc conductors.. My thinking here is that if the Line is oc due to crushing or screw damage, then it's likely that the others are damaged too. You'd be looking at an...

How to trace a break in a cable? In a wall!

Here's a thought - it's definitely the right cable isn't it? After two years I'm not sure I'd remember exactly what I'd done - these days have issues remembering what I did yesterday!! Identify the cable (beyond all doubt) by end-to-end testing with both ends open-circuit...

How to trace a break in a cable? In a wall!

How are you defining 'Dead'? Choices are: Line (aka Live) Open circuit (OC) Neutral OC Both Line and Neutral OC? Is the CPC (aka Earth) also OC or do you have continuity from the general area of the switch to the end of the cable? As far as screws through cables - I've generally found they cause...

Lights not working Help with fault

You have stated you have 2356. This is a very well structured qualification and although it doesn't specially apply to fixed wiring, the method of approach to fault finding (e.g. Unit 302 "Diagnose and correct faults in electrotechnical systems...") is valid for resolving the issue you have...

LED possible strip lighting above worktops (under wall units)

I fitted these recently. Cannot remember the make but got them from Denmans. They're only about 5mm thick and perfect for underneath cabinets where there's no pelmet...transformer is on top of the cupboard. I wired them back to the kitchen light switch so control is right next to the door - as...

Stroma Certification Scheme Stroma assessment went well - thorough, but good.

Well done you..and welcome aboard! They are a tad slow off the mark getting your welcome pack to you but it's worth the wait. I hadn't appreciated just how big (and diverse) STROMA is. It's not just electrical stuff!!! And yes, I agree with others, the 'audit' is more thorough that ELECSA. The...

My tool case has died.. which do you recommend?

I've had lots of different cases and bags over the years including hard cases. Problem is hard cases are quite heavy to start with. Ok if your in one place but a real bind climbing stairs etc. Ive used a Stanley fat max bag for a couple of years now. Almost perfect and still good. Not too heavy...

    Have a major problem

Since there was an RCD in circuit (new CU) why did the electrician fit metal capping? If I understand correctly, capping is principally to protect against plastering trowel damage. In the past, I've earthed metal capping, but have only used plastic in recent years... If he'd used plastic I guess...

Strangest thing you have found in a property?

..That's never happened to me...was part way through doing a job once when the customer - a bloke - wandered around the property in his underpants and nothing else! Added that to the job risk assessment I can tell you! Twas gross - finished as quick as I could and left. Speaking to the guys'...
