    Cable in concrete trench corroded

PVC cables buried in concrete. Doesn't seem like a good design. Last time I did some concreting, I ended up with very chapped hands.

New member seeking advice on spurs ring mains

Same here. All such work carried out by contractors, even such as changing a damaged socket outlet, although I’ve changed a couple when a danger to others and can get sparks in. Most of my time is spent on compliances and keeping clients happy!

    UK Plastic chrome light switches

Not aimed at your post specifically, these clients with oak beams and expensive flooring, but with 60 + year old wiring, most realise at some point it has to be done. I don't understand people who spend small fortunes on new kitchens & bathrooms, panoramic sliding doors, extensions etc etc, but...

    Man Builds his own extension

I converted my integral garage to a habital room myself. Just needed planning and a Building Notice and a couple of other trades. You do save money, but time wise it consumes your life, and annoys the hell out of your family and neighbours alike. Imagine being around this particular build for...

New member seeking advice on spurs ring mains

I take it your in some sort of maintenance team? I'm a qualified electrician. However my employer will not allow me to carry out any electrical installation work etc, due to insurance and warranty purposes. Plus I haven't the work time anyway.

    The Future of Fuse boards...?

Here we go again 😀 I tried using that naff grommet strip, including super gluing it, never stays it place, even when carefully inserting a larger cable. Hager bespoke grommet is the same. Manufacturers should come up with something more substantial.

    Qualified electrician

Things have changed, but when I joined my Scheme 10 years ago, they wanted evidence of my electrical competency ( that was my electrical apprenticeship completion circa 1973) and a electrical testing course, oh and the money to join. I did have a Gold Card, which they weren’t interested in. The...

Which is what I said in #14 🙂

Cause of massive night time usage?

The cess pit we have at work, has two large pumps that alternate. They are designed to 'chew up' anything, but get jammed by what people flush down the toilets. Doesn't like dry wipes, underwear, plastic bottles etc. Perhaps your pump has come across these objects?

UK EON smart meter installation nightmare

Eon changed my Smart meters a couple of years ago. If I recall, I was advised to switch off & unplug appliances. I think the 'because the property was out of range' reference, is the limited range of Bluetooth between meter and In House Display? Mines just a few meters and on same wall as...

Is this a Part P failure?

No, but I needed to get the Xmas tree down, and Mrs M was giving me grief. So I carried out a dynamic risk assessment, and deemed the risks associated were overwhelmed by the rewards to all involved.

Is this a Part P failure?

I'm the only one that goes up into my loft, I'm defined as competent (well nearly), and I need a special tool to open said loft hatch. The ones at work are a friggin nightmare to open, almost need a degree in loft hatch opening. A better analogy is needed. 🙂

    Stage 2 insulation resistance test

I don’t have 643.3.3 to hand to read. As far as I’m aware, initial testing is for the installed new circuit or addition or alteration of. If you are testing your new oven circuit, the cable between isolator and cooker connection box should also be tested, requiring the isolator to be turned on...

Can someone clarify this please...Part Pee

Think the time limit on enforcement is actually 12 months after works completion in general? And I've read there is scope for a LBC to take out an injunction.

Can someone clarify this please...Part Pee

I think building a property or an extension without planning or notice, is something LBC will go after, depending on its impact. All an indemnity policy will cover is the legal action. If it’s found against you, it doesn’t include the cost to put right. When I sold my house a few years ago, I...

Can someone clarify this please...Part Pee

Agree. However, as been said before, it can put off potential buyer’s should you try to sell your house.

Is this a Part P failure?

Some of my colleagues were bodging it 40 years ago, so nothing new there. Edit, make that 60!
