Time delayed rcd’s and fault protection

It is a TT system. Am I right in thinking if I I change time delayed to a normal 100mA then will be ok because it will trip within 0.2s, but if leave as time delayed I would have to fit RCBO’s to everything.. 1575618235 705.411.1 says just about values of RCD’s, but nothing about time delayed...

Time delayed rcd’s and fault protection

Have been to a farm today that has a 100mA time delayed RCD main switch covering a DB that has MCB’s on majority of circuits ( less than 32A) and 30mA RCBO’s on sockets, lighting etc. What I was thinking was does this comply with regs as circuits less than 32A should disconnect in less than...

    Motor starter help.

Motor plate etc. 1575311025 Yes it’s a large motor for the grain. What are the advantages of a 2 stage starter compared to a dol? I presume reduces starting current, but how. Thank you 1575311929 Sorry to ask so many questions, but could somebody explain what is the difference between a series...

    Motor starter help.

It’s definitely 240v as no 3 phase on the farm. Capacitor’s are in the motor terminal housing. If it was a dodgy capacitor surely it would be the same even when bypassing the resistor? I’ve found a drawing now, but struggling to read. If anyone could guide the stages of the starter that would be...

    Motor starter help.

Hi all, thanks again for any input. I have been asked to look at this starter as motor starts ok, but when switches over to run motor stops and starter just hums. First of all like I’ve said in previous posts I haven’t had a lot of experience with motors/ starters etc Am I right in thinking this...

    Agricultural Loading Issues

Unfortunately I am mainly an install electrician so don’t have much experience with motors etc etc. I know the basics, with dol and capacitor start/ run and the like but not much more than that. I believe they’ve got a plate cooler with the milk and apparently the guys who fitted the tanks have...

    Agricultural Loading Issues

Had Western Power out today and said they’re pulling too much juice already without new parlour. Also first time they’ve said anything, but apparently mains fuse has burned out a few times already. There is no solution I can see apart from 3 phase supply being put in (£££££), however they were...

    Agricultural Loading Issues

He’s got 120 milkers and new milking parlour has 20 milking bays so nowhere near on the scale you’re talking about. Funny you say, but parlour guys have said their next project is a rotary one which will milk 75 at a time. Apparently they’ve just been trained on one in the Netherlands which...

    Agricultural Loading Issues

Does anybody know if Western Power have a technical department I could speak to directly or does it all have to be done online? I would like to see if they could do assessment/ come out and then work out the best way to go forward. Thanks 1574600452 Like you said all possible, but to me poor...

    Agricultural Loading Issues

Luckily they are keeping old parlour going until change over. The generator is one that hooks up to the back of tractor and is on a 63 Mcb/ 100mA RCD. Haven’t had a lot of experience with agriculture before that’s why trying to get as much info as possible. Thanks

    Agricultural Loading Issues

Hi thanks in advance for any advice.. A long story, but have been asked to install new electrics to a new milking parlour on a local farm. The issue I have is that I am convinced the existing supply is not big enough, the existing supply is single phase and is installed about 30m from...

Please help my head is fried from open earths

It’s an old brick built building.. I was thinking sockets might be connected to earth rod somehow, but wouldn’t expect such a low reading of earth rod.... 1567108816 Disconnected everything from sockets when tested.

Please help my head is fried from open earths

2.5mm T+E. I took a video, but too large to upload unfortunately. Boiler is wired off socket circuit, but like I said main bonds disconnected from earth bar. Was wondering if getting reading because parallel earth through sockets cpc’s joined to gas pipe via boiler spur and through gas pipe to...

Please help my head is fried from open earths

Carried out insulation resistance test and got 10M ohm. L and N’s = 0.54 ohms end to end. Protected by 61009 RCBO. Checked polarity etc. Plastic incoming water and copper gas ( disconnected at earth bar) What I’m confused about is why I’m getting such a good earth and where it’s coming from...

Please help my head is fried from open earths

Thanks in advance. Carried out test on a socket circuit today and found open circuit on cpc’s and lives. Sorted out lives, but earths are driving me crazy. I’ve done all the obvious like connected one earth and then testing sockets etc etc. In the end after disconnecting everything from earth...

    Lighting help needed..

Hi, I have been asked to install some lighting in a commercial cooker extract canopy as they can’t see while cooking. The existing ones there are glass and have cracked, also don’t give off much light. My concern is the heat as it’s very hot where they want them mounted. I was just wondering if...
