New Consumer Unit Installation - L&N Reverse at the sockets

It is potentially dangerous and despite the pressing appointment it should have been rectified before the electrician left. Were all of the circuits (lights, immersion, cooker etc) tested? What did the tester look like that he used? We all have bad days, but I'm surprised that the problem is...

Heatmiser UH8 Heat Enable/Boiler Enable Connections

As you suggest it's a volt free contact for the boiler on the UH8. The live for the boiler switch wire needs to come from the boiler so that the boiler isolator disconnects all live supplies to the boiler. You can parallel up the UH8 volt free contact with the zone valve end switches for the...

Lighting for Art school ideas and thoughts

Probably best to speak to Phillips or one of the other major suppliers to see what they can specify for you. Sounds like a good project!

I prefer Prysmian as well. It used to be Pirelli which came in the same useless boxes!

NICEIC Certification Scheme Niceic QS how much responsibility

In my mind the QS, as the title suggests, should be supervising. For larger jobs they should regularly be on site overseeing the installation and testing. For smaller jobbing type works they should at least be spot checking their electricians work. As ever, the employer needs to give their QS's...

Evening all, looking to get back into the trade

Currently you'd only need 17th Edition to join one of the competent persons schemes. Several on here are members of Stroma which is cheaper than the others. You'll also need insurance, test kit etc.

Cables with thermosetting insulation (XLPE cables)

Also bear in mind that the impedance of the conductors increases with temperature, so running at 90degC will increase volt drop, R1,Rn and R2.

Pretty sure my cps assessor was wrong

First one depends on the load that you have calculated for the installation. Second one I don't agree with. Tails are insulated and sheathed, same as twin and earth... Edit: Speedy Lee beat me to it!

    Overload Protection - Major Renovation

Your electricians proposals sound pretty fair. In reality it's unlikely that your circuits or submains will ever be fully loaded. For example what would use 60A in the summer house? Basically, you can run tails up to 3m from the meter position without providing any circuit protection (fuses) so...

    Ceiling Wiring Confusion (4 wires)

Your electrician should be able to explain once they've worked out and tested the wiring.

    Ceiling Wiring Confusion (4 wires)

Is your new light fitting metal as you don't seem to have any earthing there. Best thing would be to call in an electrician who can ensure it's safe. Unfortunately relying on the mcb to trip using trial and error is more dangerous than many people realise and could cause more problems.

Replacing a gas boiler with electric.

A freestanding convector heater from the DIY shop is also 100% efficient. Have you explained that it'll cost more to run than gas? Also, he might find the lights dim every time it cuts in depending on how good the dno network is.

LED Bulbs won't work together on same circuit.

Sounds like it was the switch wire rather than the neutral. Glad the OP got the problem sorted.
