Always do an EICR before changing the CU. Highlights lots of issues and gives a baseline - you then know what to quote for. If they choose not to go ahead - the EICR stands with the codes / observations explaining the issues ahead.
Personally, I would prefer rid of the printed book and get a cheaper monthly / annual subscription - download. Updates can then be pretty slick and no need to buy the book. Viewable on phone / tablet / desktop. Saying that... would still buy a printed OSG. Printed 7671 provided by exam centres...
Oddly, the word Electrician derived from Magician - where some bod produced Tesla sparks and made people hair stand on end with the old van de graaff - the Victorians loved it. Even BS7671 doesn't use the term. Competent Person Electrical, I believe... So yes you can be an electrician, if you...
Make sure you have a waste disposal and health and safety (risk) policy. Something you might get a customer to sign to say they understand that they can take the waste themselves to the recycle tip or you’ll have to charge to take it and to summarise the risks (and say, control of children)...
I’ll consider myself corrected regarding melting point of solder and will never mention it again without throwing myself naked into the nettle patch. I would still not advise someone to solder connections - Luciens remarks about skilled soldering stand but not everyone can solder and I would be...
Agreed Kenny, lol, you would. This thought was based on seeing tests in the past on various connectors during an deliberate overload. The connectors; wago, crimps and the classic terminal block all did well despite melted insulation. The soldered connection faired badly because the mechanical...
Personally I wouldn’t solder, melting point of solder is pretty low - this will melt first. Preference would be Wago (32A) connectors first and then inline crimped connectors where space is a premium. I would also consider using this box for connections only and use a blank faceplate. This...
I can’t get the eBay link to work but the Lindy site seems to address the issue and shows the correct BS, which is what you need. This is a common problem with charging SELV (Separated Extra Low Voltage), as Apple report the touch voltage is “within acceptable guidelines”. May explain why Apple...
I think the problem here is the lighting circuits are not RCD protected. There is no free slot to add or move the circuit to be RCD protected. Hence the need to change the board (which is pretty full). The lighting needs to be RCD protected for the new work, although it wasn’t (needed) when...

Whilst training in the RAF a long time ago, calling a lamp a bulb resulted in having to do like a million press-ups or something. Made me laugh... the thread not the press-ups.
Great thread - I think it's 50/50 either way. I like the MOT example since to get the MOT you need to pay first. I would like to think a payment would be made on delivery of the certs but I can also see why these might be withheld until payment is made. What happens if they customer never pays...
Bear with me @Midwest but I'm not sure being a member of Elecsa* (*or any other body) does automatically authorise you - It should do I agree. I'm not sure it actually does. Unless you know that Elecsa* have an agreement with the DNO that their members have automatic authorisation.
If push came...
