A rewire is a notifiable job as you rightly said, so building control will need to be informed before the work starts, unless your electrician has permission from his company to notify under their name. If not you’ll have to pay your local LABC fees.
If it had been a customers board change I may have done an EICR beforehand, but at present an EICR is NOT a reg or compulsory before changing a cu, so it’s up to the electricians discretion if one is carried out or not!
There are timed served electricians on this very forum that haven’t...
The IR test was a pass at >999MOhms and Zs tests are all within range.
Just one query though.....Is it best practice to measure Zs on lighting circuits or calculate the value using Zs= Ze + R1+R2?
I can either for my test results sheet.

The landlord gave me permission to change the fuseboard and I didn’t say I couldn’t remove the light fittings, the oven is plugged in to a double socket behind the oven. After the assessment (fail or pass) I will instal a switched FCU next to the plug the oven & Extractor hood is spurred from...
Apology accepted. :)
I wasn’t actually asking for anyone’s actual rates they charge, just a rough idea of what a call out fee should cover etc. Could’ve worded first post a bit better to be honest.
I was there for an hour & half fault finding, found what I believe was the fault (on lighting circuit in downstairs toilet), customer was going out at 5pm, so agreed for me to come back to compete the repair. Didn’t know what to charge them. When I go back I will adjust fee accordingly. Had...
Had my first ever call out today, but didn’t have a clue what to charge for a call out fee! Was only there an hour, found the problem and need to back to finish the job as I need to cut a small hole in the ceiling. So I just charged them £50 for the hour I was there.
What is a rough figure...
Hi Bunty, the green fly lead is the earth cable for the metal fixing of the lights frame and the other 3 cables will most likely be line, neutral & earth, but as has already been said you need to find out which wire is which. You need an electrician to help you identify these wires & install...
Fuz, what actually trips, is it the RCD for a set of mcb’s, or is it an individual mcb that keeps tripping?
If it’s the mcb, is there a label below it that says what circuit it’s protecting and what is plugged in to the sockets of this circuit?
Amongst a few niggling faults I got after changing my consumer unit was that the oven, extractor hood and hob igniter circuit has no power. All cables that were in the old fuse board are fitted in to the new cu and all 4 circuits are working, yet the power to the above appliances is not there...
Watch the videos by John Ward and SparkyNinja who explain all the changes in the 18th edition.
Never experienced fallen cables that hindered me in a house fire, nor the melting of plastic rawl plugs causing items to fall.
