    Rewireable main fuse.

I was changing a consumer unit today and the DNO's main cut-out was a porcelain rewireable fuse inside a hinged metal unit. There were no markings on the fuse-holder, and the fuse consisted of two strands of wire, approx 0.75mm dia each. I'm afraid I haven't seen one like this before. Can...

    N Test results.

Don't know if anyone's still interested, but it seems that an old certificate held by the customer has, amongst others, Schedule M - Circuit Details and, wait for it ... Schedule N - Test Results. Confusion solved. Thanks for the posts everyone.

    N Test results.

Well I'm a Scouser and he's a Southerner so I wouldn't rule out language problems somewhere!

    N Test results.

Hi, I'm doing a CU change in a couple of weeks and the customer (a retired engineer) has asked if I will be supplying "N Test results for main circuits supplying this consumer unit." Does anyone know what he means by this? Thanks.

    Does a dimmer reduce voltage?

Thanks everyone. I swapped the dimmer for a normal switch and it showed 230V (haven't connected up the actual light yet) so it seems you were all right about my meter getting confused by chopped sine waves. Thanks again.

    Does a dimmer reduce voltage?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've just put in a small radial lighting circuit, the last light of which is on a dimmer switch. When I measure the voltage at the light I'm only getting about 150V, even when the switch is turned up full. Is this because the dimmer is taking out some of...

    Power to shed.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just tell him it doesn't look too tidy and leave it at that - it's up to him if he wants it to look less like a saloon bar.

    Power to shed.

I was changing an extractor fan today and while I was there noticed the set-up he had for his shed: 2 x s/o + 1 fluorescent light via a junction box in the shed, what looks like 2.5mm SWA down the small garden into a box on the outside of the house then through into the living room to a 13A RCD...

    Class II outside pendant.

Thanks Richard, that's a big help.

    Class II outside pendant.

Can anyone tell me where I can get hold of an outside pendant (coaching lantern style) in plastic or polycarbonate? I can find wall-mounted versions but the customer wants to replace his existing (metal) one without paying to run a cpc to it. Thanks.

    Main fuse question.

I came across this the other day and was wondering if anyone could educate me. A TNC-S supply, into a relatively new box where the neutral and earth separate, line and neutral coming out of the top of the box via a 100A fuse to the meter. So far so simple, but next to the main 100A fuse are what...

Detached garage - to certify or not to certify.

Can anyone help me with a paperwork issue? I've just installed a floodlight onto the external wall of a detached garage. The garage's slave consumer unit (is 'slave' the right term?) had a spare 5A re-wireable fuse so I connected the light into that, the only other part of the circuit being the...

    Can anyone recommend some books?

I've just passed my Part P and signed up with Elecsa, plan being to build up a one man band doing local domestic work. I've got a bit of experience helping out a spark mate in the past, and will obviously learn on the job as time goes on, but I realise there's a lot more to know about this game...
