Hello all.
Had a job today putting in a new kitchen circuit. Plan was to put in a new CU just for the kitchen sockets and lights. When I looked at the cut out, found a Seeboard PME label and the neutral came out of the cut-out into a Henley block then onwards to the meter. So far so good but...
Thanks Pete. I'll try that when I go back but I'm not optimistic - the cpc is there and tests up except when it has any sort of contact with the back box. It's in the kitchen - maybe I should tell the customer to look for a battery-powered toaster!
Thanks for the replies all (and sorry for getting back late - you really don't want to know about the weekend I've just had!).
I'm using the socket attachment for my MFT and haven't had any problems with it before so doubt that that's the problem.
The socket in question is a spur from the...
Hi, I don't know if anyone can help with this. A customer called me out saying that a British Gas boiler service had highlighted a socket showing >2000 on the EFLI test. I went to look and got 1.12 on one side of the (two gang) socket and >2000 on the other. I assumed it was a dodgy socket and...
Thanks both. And I think that's where I didn't understand how RCD's work. I thought that, as they measure leakage to earth, they'd need some sort of cpc in the circuit to work. I can see now that obviously that leak to earth can go through a washing machine or a dog or a person and doesn't have...
1. Need to get some sort of earth into the garage - absolutely nothing there now and thought TT would be easier than running another cable from the house.
2. Yes, I suppose I am, and yes, the house is 30ma.
Thanks.
Hello. I'm afraid I've got a bit of a hole in my knowledge about RCD's so if anyone could reassure me/tell me I'm completely wrong about this I'd appreciate it.
Was called to a customer today to put an extra socket in his garage and found that it's fed by twin 1.5mm with no cpc, buried in...
Hi,
I was called to a customer's today who'd had a spark in last week who left her with a danger notice (she wanted me to quote for the remedial work). The notice said that the danger was a 16th edition consumer unit which needed upgrading (nothing wrong with it, just 16th ed instead of 17th)...
Hi,
I've been asked to change a CU in a converted one-bed flat immediately above the cellar which contains the TNS supply. The existing CU is currently supplied by a 6m run of clipped direct 10mm T&E protected by a 63A switch-fuse in the cellar. It's a small flat, haven't worked out maximum...
I was at a customer's yesterday who wanted three double sockets added to a room which currently only has one double socket which is spurred off the ring. I explained that we couldn't spur off the spur as the first spur can only take 27A, so suggested that the solution would be to replace the...
Thanks all, and sorry for lack of detail. I haven't started the job yet but it's a converted Victorian house so I assume lathe and plaster ceilings. I'll be (hopefully!) fitting fire-rated mains downlights. So is the concensus to use rods to lay cable on the ceiling and notch out the bottom of...
I need to convert a pendant into three downlights in the hallway of a ground floor flat. No access available from above, so the simplest way I could come up with would be chasing the cable into the actual ceiling and plastering it in. All RCD protected, so was thinking that I'm just treating the...
Customer called me out today. Installation has been fine for years until they had a 24 hour power cut last week. Since then the cooker circuit constantly trips the RCD. Dual RCD Doepke board. TNCS.
I disconnected the cooker switch and it still tripped. Had a look inside the CU and no loose...
Sorry, probably didn't give enough info.
At the moment there are two two-way switches, s1 which has the two core switch live to the light fitting and is connected by three core to s2. I want to add another (two way?) switch, s3, also linked by three core to s1, making s1 the intermediate...
I know I should be able to work this one out but my head is hurting ...
Currently there's a two-way switch in operation at each end of a hall. Customer wants to be able to switch from upstairs as well, but cable run-wise it's much easier to run to upstairs from the switch which is currently...
