UK Identifying live, neutral and earth in outdoor festoon lighting

No it’s all from the same set and they’re all the same. Three rubber wires going into either a male or female 2 pin connector.

UK Identifying live, neutral and earth in outdoor festoon lighting

Thanks for the help, by the way. What’s strange though is when I connect an end to the power supply the lights don’t come on. But technically they should as they come in 5m lengths. I’m wondering if the unknown wire was connected to a pin to complete a circuit within each length? If so would...

Some further photos. Is it unusual for three wires but only 2 pins? If that’s the case what could be the purpose of the wire not showing continuity. Maybe inside the moulded plug it was connected to one of the pins? But if so when I did my continuity test on the length with the 2 pins and then...

It's all moulded closed. To get access to the wires on the corroded end I broke it up but it's quite soft plastic so didn't smash open but I'll send you a couple more of the inside.

I think if I get a continuity reading between two pins and two (out of the three) wires I'm going to assume the wire without a reading is the earth and the other two wires are live and neutral. I'll then do a voltage test between the assumed earth and the other two wires. The one with a voltage...

Doesn’t seem so. No continuity reading between either pin…

Good point. Yep so I get a continuity reading between a wire and a pin/hole in the other end so I know which two wires are connected to the pins/holes I just don’t know which is live or neutral, yet.

I've carried out a continuity test on the three wires at one end of a 5m length and the other end (with either a male 2 pin connector or a female connector accepting 2 pins) and have identified which wire (out of the three) isn't "connected" to the pins. I'm assuming this is then an earth? The...

I spoke to customer service and yes you cannot replace the bulbs but if one bulb goes it doesn't break the sequence (unless the bulb connection itself breaks) so I'm curious. They also said "The wires are positive and negative wires which make up the AC-DC" which doesn't help me.

Ah I see what you mean. The starter cable is 3 pin uk plug to that black box to a female end (accepting two pins). The 5m length of lights has those three wires exposed (which was 3 wires going into a 2 pin male connector) and then a female end.

Can you point me in the direction of finding out more about this?

Thanks so much for this. I've got a multimeter so will look this up. Any suggestion of what I'd be looking for between each test?

Thanks again. I know what you mean but it has that big block on the starter plug (ConnectPro® 2m Starter Cable, Black or White - Powers up to 7600 LEDs - https://www.festive-lights.com/2m-starter-cable-with-uk-plug-black-or-white) but think I’ve been confused with ConnectGo vs ConnectPro (what...

Thanks for the reply! There’s nothing on the transformer. The writing seems like manufacturer stuff only. I’ve attached a bunch of photos. And yep it’s keyed.

Also when plugged in the lights don’t light up. I’m thinking the three wires must loop back when they’re normally inside the male/female connector? If one side is connected to the plug then I thought they would light even though the other end has been cut off?

UK Identifying live, neutral and earth in outdoor festoon lighting

I bought some outdoor festoon lighting a few years ago and the 2 pin connectors (male and female) have corroded so I’m going to splice the connectors together using heat shrink butt connectors. Each run is 5m with a male and female 2 pin connector at each end. My first thought was that this...

Replacing a pull cord extractor fan with timer extractor fan

I’m replacing an old 100mm extractor fan in the kitchen with a new one. The old one was a pull cord fan whereas I bought a timer one (no pull cord) thinking I could use the isolator switch (which is directly below the fan) as the on/off switch. The cabling is a 3 core and on the new fan there’s...

I think you’re totally right! I’ll report back but this makes the most sense and yes the black cable with brown and blue is from bulb 👍🏻
