Been asked to quote for a job where the small power and lighting needs separate metering.
I’ve not come across this before as I usually only do small commercial, which I believe is exempt from this requirement. Anyone know the actual requirements as per regulations? Anyway I digress.
I...
Anyone suggest an alternative to the below?

They’ve been specified on a council job and the trouble I’m having with these absolute chancers. I paid for them 2 weeks ago and have still not received. Why on earth they have to specify from...
I recently fitted a Heatmiser Neostat for a customer in their hall- to control their radiators throughout the house (70’s 4 bed medium sized detached).
Quite bizarrely the thermostat is reading 3 or so degrees above the actual temperature when the lounge/hall door is open. Ie stat shows 22...
I’ve got a job coming up where the customer wants an EVSE fitted in their rear communal parking area 50m from the house.
As such there are a few unusual requirements.
LAN/Ethernet connection is a must. I don’t want to be relying on Wi-Fi at that distance.
Customer ideally wants untethered...
I’m looking to upgrade my tool bag and can’t decide which Veto bag is right for me.
Nobody ever seems to have a claw hammer in their bags in the reviews etc? This is one of my most used tools. If it doesn’t fit in the LC, then that’s that out. I want to carry a claw hammer, bolster, couple of...
Looking to have a bit of an upgrade of my cordless tools. I'll be sticking with Dewalt as some of it is still in good nick. I find it irritating carrying multiple small cases around for various drills etc, batteries, chargers though.
Can anyone recommend a storage case suitable in size for a...
As above, SDS drill sparking and intermittently down on power. Sparking between brushes and commutator.
Brushes and springs seem ok, but have quite a curved surface at point of contact. Loads of meat left on brushes.
Will changing brushes fix it or is it dead?!
Anyone had much luck with these? I fitted 2x to the same circuit that had been working fine for weeks with the standard Quinetic switch QUR303.
First one gave disco effect and wouldn't turn off. Button on receiver turned red led indicator on and off but no effect on output
Second one never...
Anyone know if the reduced height, switched neutral Wylex RCBO's will fit in this enclosure? Planning to rip the all the devices out and start again with all RCBO, but don't want to change the enclosure. I seem to remember the newer Wylex boards have a different shaped flap on the lid?
Maybe...
Had a couple now where they won’t reset after a fault current is put through it. Lamp blowing etc. switch goes floppy and won’t reset.
Used to fit Hager and never had a failure. Tempted to switch back now. Anyone else had similar issues or just my bad luck? Probably fitted 150 fusebox RCBO’s...
The company I last used for my company branded tops seem to have stopped trading. Who does everyone use? The last lot was ‘fruit of the loom’ which is just ok. The jumpers were useless for me though. Far too short. Seem to be made for short round people! The fleeces and t shirts a bit better...
So there I was the other day posting on here about me going to solve faults others couldn't find and I've got one myself.
It's been a while since I've been stumped but I am now.
Symptoms - gate supply keeps tripping (when it's raining according to customer). There's a 6mm 3 core SWA running...
Got a job to do soon where sub mains x2 have been run to a flat in pyro. Earth via sheath. No gland fitted - just the pot with a BS951 clamp. Suspect it’s all imperial size and tight to access, so not planning to mess about with it too much.
Do these pyro clamps actually exist? Can anyone...
I’ve been asked to price up a job which includes fitting a 100watt led flood on top of a 6m pole.
Thinking of using a lamp post with a floodlight bracket on top. Not used one of the flood brackets before. Looks like a floodlight will attach to it at the bottom of the fitting rather than at the...
Just set up a Hikvision NVR and cameras for a customer. All fine except the Hik Connect app says the cameras are offline unless you are connected to the house network. Ie it won’t work on 4g or another Wi-fi/network.
I’m sure I didn’t have this problem last time I set one of these up. A while...
This might be a silly question and after 20 years doing this I probably should know the answer, but can a switched mode power supply and an led driver be the same thing?
Example: I had a job the other day and I got a ‘while you’re here request’. Customer has a couple of 12v deadbolts to lock...
Just looked at a job and the storage heater has a peak and off peak supply to it. These are on different phases.
There is a label on it to warn of this. Not something I’ve seen before though and feels wrong but probably almost inevitable in commercial buildings with storage heaters.
Thoughts.
Load of downlights in a flat, all taped connector block joints. No enclosures.
No access above as it's a suspended ceiling with concrete above. Normally I'd be thinking C2, but I'm struggling to see the potential danger here so veering towards C3. Is there any written guidance on this...
Come across this a couple of times recently whilst doing eicr’s. Everything all ok except there is no access to the (presumably) earth rod. The cable just disappears under a patio.
Of course it may not even be an earth rod. It could be a plate or something. I’ve been giving these a C3 as I...
I have a potential job coming up where there is some 2x2 steel trunking that is completely overfilled and the lid is missing from various points.
I need to add more cables on this run too ideally. Are there any clever products/methods out there to increase the size of this trunking to say 4x4...
