NICEIC Certification Scheme Mounting EV charger on external meter cabinet

Customer wants me to mount his EV charger on the back of an external, plastic meter cabinet. The cabinet is a new plastic one at the other side of his drive from the house with a separate consumer unit inside. This would be an ideal location for ease of installation. Is this allowed or will I...

    Main Earthing in Consumer Unit

I am due to carry out an electrical job in a third floor flat. Incoming supply is TN-S. Cannot locate a main earthing conductor inside the CU on the earth bar, just the individual circuits CPCs. There are two earths clamped to the bottom of the metal CU, one disappearing down some metal...

    RCD Test Failing

I’ve tested at 250ma and 300ma. Still having the same issue. The RCBOs pass the test when MFT is set to AC.

    RCD Test Failing

Replaced the RCBOs with new ones and still having the same problem. Tried it at the socket (outdoor), and at the DB with the conductors disconnected. RCBO still failing for additional protection at 5X In (56ms). Any ideas what could be causing this? Cheers

Thanks for that. The link seems to indicate RCCBs prior to July 2019?

Insulation Resistance - Low Reading on Ring

Thanks for all the replies. It ended up being a mixture. I split the ring and had the low reading at both ends. I totally disconnected the neons and tested each leg and it was normal (>999M). On the other side of the ring I discovered a dishwasher that was plugged in under the plinth. When...

    ZE Test Question

Thanks for the replies. Even though it’s only 2 metres, it is quite a distance to run a lead to the MET as it’s the other side of the wall.

    ZE Test Question

I will be testing the secondary CU. It only has the earth from the MET attached to it (no bonding). In the MET is just the supply earth and one earth to each CU. Bonding is connected to the primary CU (which isn’t being tested). I assume it’s therefore ok to isolate both CUs, disconnect the...

    ZE Test Question

TNCS. So you’d obviously use a wander lead to test against the live on the Consumer unit?

    ZE Test Question

Newbie testing question: Two consumer units in same location. Tails approximately 2 metres. MET bar next to meter in another room. Bonding attached to main consumer unit. Where should I remove the earth from, consumer unit or MET? If MET, use a wander lead? My thoughts are to disconnect earth...

Lighting Fault - mystery 3 core

For info, I fixed the problem. There was a broken neutral in the 3 plate under the floorboard upstairs. They’d used the 3 core to feed at the switch with Line/Neutral and used the third core as a switch line for one of the dimmers. Still not sure about the mystery 150V ??‍♂️. Also, one of those...

    Extending Cable

Newbie Question I am faced with some very short cables inside a double socket. What is the best way of extending them? I am thinking Wagos would be acceptable as the back box is accessible, but would like to know the industry standard method please. If anyone can also point me to the...

Lighting Fault - mystery 3 core

Yes, just what I thought. There is a newer t&e coming in from the top (sleeving just inside grommet) and an older one at the bottom. One feeds the pendant and the other for the wall lights. Then there is the 3 core. Neutrals in the connector at the back of the switch so I assumed (maybe wrongly)...

Lighting Fault - mystery 3 core

They had been doing a loft conversion above, including complete first fix but not connected up the CU. Client said the light started acting funny after they had done a runner. All sounds like a very odd story to me but just need to get to the bottom of this fault find. I thought maybe the...
