How can you clear a fault but have no power

At this "first" fitting it's loop in. The rest appear to be joint boxes and old par 38 light fittings. It is reasonably old wiring but not ancient. it's near wildlife / golf course and although i haven't seen droppings i have come across gnawed insulation

How can you clear a fault but have no power

.... Unless the CPC is broken between the CCU and first fitting and then the Line is broken after the CPC break and touching the CPC going forward and earthing via an alternative path?? But then Why am I not getting voltage at the cpc?

How can you clear a fault but have no power

Hi all. Big old house with upstairs lights tripping. Barely any access in attic due to old beams etc. Insulation resistance fault of 0.34 Live to Earth Disconnected all conductors at assumed first light fitting. IR fault at CCU now >10MO I re-energise at the CCU so I can see if any other...

Range cooker tripping breaker, even when all settings switched off

Hi guys n gals. I don't often do appliances but been looking at a range cooker of a regular customer (gas hobs, 3x electirc ovens). It keeps blowing the 32A MCB with a flash at the back of the range (unable to position myself behind to see where from but suspect it's around the incoming...

Best way to locate a fault in garden 12v lighting

Alas none of the T connectors are accessable. Even the few that I can see are out of reach :/ I suppose I could take each fitting out to test by snipping each cable. I'd have to clamp all the cables to stop them retracting back into the wall (& have decent weather!). I'll ask the customer if...

Best way to locate a fault in garden 12v lighting

Just to update on this, for what it's worth.... I returned the other week to try some of the suggestions but didn't really get anywhere. Not helped by the British weather! Although I suspected the constant current drivers were ok anyway, as I had tested each one with the group of lights that...

UK AFDD - Has this left a loophole for landlords?

Not had any dealings with AFDDs yet thank god but just wondering if it's feasible to have one 40A type C AFDD with two 20A type A RCBOs off it? I agree it's bizarre but would it be allowed?

Anyone ever come across a neutral using the earth on purpose?

No and why are they not earthed??? Presumably there's no CPC in the cable?

EICR code for over rated shower

Sorry. Yeh, you're right about the 240v. I was thinking 230v. To be fair I was sat waiting for a hospital op so was distracted ;)

EICR code for over rated shower

I'm never keen on doing that (Mainly because of the amount of burnt out isolators I've had to replace due to bad terminations and the amount of current). Plus off the top o me head I don't think the zs would allow more than 40A. The landlord wants it swapping back to a 8.5 which I'm happy with

EICR code for over rated shower

Hello guys n gals, Did n EICR other week in a flat where the shower circuit was 40A mcb with RCD protection, 6mm cable. Only about 10M run. The 8.5kw shower had been replaced by the tenant for a 10.5kw one (old one was still in the cupboard is how I know). Unusually, the installation supply...

Anyone ever come across a neutral using the earth on purpose?

Just interested in peoples thinking on using the neutral through the earthing system like I came across today. I've come across many wrong polarities tripping mcbs before but not this. The outside front door light live conductor was wired into the lightswitch inside but the neutral was wired...

    Borrowed neutral - again!

Bit late reading this thread lol. But it just occured to me to use a kinetic switch to overcome this problem. I've found a good reliable one for £30 (a lot cheaper than a couple of years ago) which I've used in garden lighting a couple of times. I think I'll give it a go with a replacement ccu...

Why wouldn't a volt pen pick up voltage?

Read the post - It had been painted over several times (including the actual toggle). I could have tried breathing on it to melt the paint away but a hammer seemed quicker I ought to have used my club though - Caaaaaaaaaptain Caaaaaaaavemaaaaaan 😄

Why wouldn't a volt pen pick up voltage?

UPDATE: I went back, Isolated both at the Memspan switchfuse (thank you Lucien) and also at the main CCU (as an additional percaution), used my volt pen on the painted over switch in the bathroom, smashed the bloody thing open with my hammer, and did dead/live testing for real with my voltage...
