Currently my builder is placing the cables straight under the slabs between the hard-core and cement. Should he be doing this or do they need to be insulated?
Hi All, opinions please, just been to a property that has a 6mm cable ontop of 200mm of loft insulation so not buried. What de-rating factor would everyone apply to this
Would it help if i could get it in some big trunking?
Hello
I need to extend 13 5 core 6mm non swa cables, the joint's will be outside - above ground with no weather or sun protection.
Any advice on the best product to use for this task would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris
Due to a change of inverter location I need to lengthen some 4mm dc cables. These are run in plastic flexi conduit. No space for adding mc4 connectors and a junction box or dc switch would be difficult. Is it acceptable to crimp a butt joint and double heat-wrap over the joints? Each one will be...
Hi guys,
Just wanted to ask if anyone knew whether its ok to run twin and earth in a purpose built skirting board designed to enclose cables.
I have seen pvc skirting boards and mdf skirting boards that are specially designed to enclose cables. All you'd have to do is a chase on the wall down...
Hello, I need to seal round some cables and off of memory some sealants have negative effects with regards to PVC does anybody know if the below sealant is safe for use on PVC cables? It says in the data sheet 'also for maintaining the integrity of pipes and cables that penetrate them' but...
Hi, I’m adding a heat detector into my existing smoke detector system.
The new detector will be inspected and commissioned by an electrician, but I’m fitting it to the ceiling and running the cables to save time taken by a professional (their suggestion as they are very busy).
This is already...
Hi. I have had to cut a cable in order to feed it through a wall. Then I plan to reattach it once through. At the moment I am using a standard terminal block however it looks messy as it's bulky and I have to use electrical tape.
I was wondering if I could use one of these...

ive drilled a hole through the wall, put conduit through the hole to protect the cables and put a junction box over the holes. inside the house is mini trunking and single core cables. outside is swa.

Morning all.
I am replacing a 1g socket, with a 2g socket. Because I cant (cant be bothered :tearsofjoy:) make the hole in the wall bigger, I am going to make it surface mounted.
The cables are too short, and they do no stretch the extra distance to cover the backbox. Ive been told about these...
Looking to use the BS8436 style of shielded cables in place of SWA for some cable (indoor and outdoor) that is not RCD protected so it benefits from the protection against penetration that the conductive layer provides. Just looking for any advice/recommendation of which manufacturer to go for...

Hi All
Just moved into a new house and am going to re-wire the whole place (sparks by trade). I have very little experience in home network systems but would also like to run CAT6 cable for internet in each room, CCTV also. Are there any good websites or can anyone give advice on where/how I...
Could somebody please clarify a certain aspect of this for me? I have posted in the IET forum and got no reply.
So say you install cables in a wall/partition less than 50mm below the surface. You run the cables in the specified zones and you protect it with a 30ma RCD.
Do you still need to...
I'm rewiring my house at the minute and am faced with a situation I've never had to solve before.
I want to run buried containment round my chimney breast to carry cables that aren't power to a wall mounted TV via a hairy plate.
I'm thinking 2 HDMI and 1 cat6 cable so am thinking 2 x 25mm...
Around 25 years ago I went to Spain with my girlfriend and stayed in an apartment, as she was unpacking the suitcase I decided to take the consumer unit face plate off and have a look. I was surprised to find what looked like 6.0mm cooker cable forming a ring, when I removed the faceplate from a...
I want to replace my consumer unit and move it down the wall so don't need a chair to get at it.
However the wires leading to the Consumer Unit are not long enough and would need extending
I gather that compliant way to extend is to use a suitably encased DIN rail with DIN terminal connectors...
