When doing an EIC for an additional circuit (which only covers that circuit), does the 'main switch/switch-fuse/circuit-breaker/RCD' section refer to:
a) the MCB you're adding for the new circuit
b) the existing main switch (whatever it is) for that board
c) [if the DB the circuit is added to is...
Hi can you power a second consumer unit in the garage from our main consumer unit. We have a big armed cable from the main consumer unit into the garage and can we connect this to a second consumer unit? The armed cable current runs our solor and comes from the fuse in the picture attached.
Hello,
I am a homeowner and have a solar project coming up. I intend to install a 9kw solar system but I am not sure if I have to upgrade my main panel or not.
I have a 200A main panel with only 3 breaker slots, 1 is 100A double pole breaker feeding the sub panel located inside the home, the...
Hi all, I have been on a site repairing damage caused by travellers collecting copper for the last week. We have found and replaced cabling to get the site up and running. Power has been on for a few days but today the 11KV ring main unit tripped. This feeds a transformer attached to the main...
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I just want to confirm:
Currently I have a spur leaving a socket in the bedroom, into a 13A Switched FCU and running up to power a double socket in the loft.
I now want to locate a socket in the old boiler cupboard/airing cupboard to power a tumble...
Good morning all, long time reader first time post so looking for some help
I’m qualified as an electrician but haven’t worked as a sparky for 15 years or so. I’m just starting a self build and going to do as much as I can but over thinking that the first hurdle
New main in to the house was...
Hi Everyone,
I have a faulty smart meter, its broken since I moved in and I am putting all my effort to fix this, I am a tenant though.
A technician from the supplier visited the property, inspected the meter and he said that he needs to access to main fuse box to replace the meter. We have...
Hi all,
just looking for guidance on how you would code a 2.5mm main earthing conductor on a property with 10mm line conductor.
Basically on a massenette the one below has the incoming supply, and the one above I'm working in is looped supply off it the one below, 10mm tails in conduit with...
Hello All
Can I say to start with I am not an electrician but used to be a heating engineer (yes I can hear the groans). I have wired the installation myself using the correct wiring and isolators, racking and trunking and it is not grid tied it is purely off grid with a separate input for a...
Hello all,
i am fitting an Spd to an existing installation and looking through installation instructions and it has a diagram where the feed for an Spd located externally has come from the bottom of the main switch. Does not seem right to me. Just wondered what people’s thought were on this. I...
Hi guys.
I was on EICR yesterday, where i found that the main earthing conductor is with very small csa- no more than 2.5cm2.
Also they run the wire directly behind the CU, where it is twisted with 10mm2 and continues to the MET inside the board.
Ze at the board is 0.28 ohms and seems to be ok...
So just been out to replace a main switch that had burnt out, Sat afternoon so had to replace with a Wylex one that fitted no problem to at least give them power... Need to go back and replace the switch with a Hager one, its SB299U..

Hello, I am currently DIY upgrading a caravan with my girlfriend but need some advice.
The (very old) 230VAC to 13.8VDC power supply broke down and needs to be replaced. It is rated with 10A output but I would like to replace it with a 12V one with at least 15A. The old supply was intended to...
So as the title says can I use a mcb as the main switch. Basically to keep it short I’ve took a 25mm sub main to power an outbuilding. Mains coming in will be Henley blocked and new tails will go into enclosure with b63a mcb which then feeds 25mm swa to outhouse which contains its own c/u which...
What would of stopped this happening?
Job I did this morning.
SWA supply for outbuilding had sliced basic insulation at the gland due to poor wire stripping. Another outgoing SWA feed for an external GYM was actually back feeding water into the consumer unit as it was uphill and had some head...
Hello all
I have recently installed a sub main in 4mm 3-core SWA, approx length 45 metres, to feed a small garden office.
Final circuits in the cabin are protected by 30mA RCBOs and the supply is fed from a 32A MCB on the non-RCD side of the DB in the house. As the installation is TT I put in...
Hi,
I've only just noticed that my 1930s house looks like it has a second, disused intake.
Here it is highlighted in red, just to the right of the main fuse
And here it it close up
Anyone have an idea what it would be for? It must've been there since the house was built as it goes...
I'm having an extension built and the builder leading the project has said that the electrician will be over in about 4-6 weeks to start his works (wiring for a kitchen dining space, movie room, utility, wc and hallway).
I'm trying to plan ahead and have just finished researching EV charging...
Hi this may be a simple answer to my question but I can't find the answer in the regs
If im fitting a garage board from a consumer unit with RCD protection do I need to have RCD protection in the garage board?
I'm guessing I don't need an RCD at the garage board but I can't find a definite...
