Afternoon all,
Ive looked at the building regs but can't seem to find anything, i remember reading something that said when fitting smoke alarms off a lighting circuit you need to put some form of isolation in, is that correct?
I'm also looking to install nest alarms, do they all need to be...
I am fitting a heat detector in a new kitchen. The rest of the house has battery smoke detectors.
I have quoted to update all smoke detectors to mains powered and radio linked. However, is it only my new work that has to comply? In other words do I have to update all other alarms?
I guess my...
I have just been to look at a job were the builder has started the first fix as I was unable to be there. He has forgotten to put in a cable to the heat detector in the kitchen, partly my responsibility as I should have reminded him more fully.
My plan is to have it radio linked to the hallway...
Am I correct in thinking under the 18th edition for a new build property an AFDD is compulsory or is this not the case if risk assessed? I am still yet to complete my 18th ed. Also for new build properties is it still ok to hard wire smoke and fire detectors off lighting circuits under 18th...
Smoke Alarms Not Waking Kids Up (Which smoke alarms will wake a child??)
It seems that many high pitch smoke alarms wont wake up kids.
#WakeUpCall
They're trying out smoke alarms that use a human voice with a low pitch.
It's on WatchDog right now.
So does anybody have any experience with...
hi
i'm going to be having some wiring carried out on my new first floor extension (new bedroom) which just entails extending the ring main, and lighting circuit and adding interlinked mains smoke alarms to the upstairs lighting circuit, including a heat alarm in the kitchen.
i've spoke to...
hey guys been asked to test some smoke alarms for a letting agent. And need to issue a cert to say they are satisfactory or not! I know this question has been asked before but what cert do I need to issue. Also does anyone have a link for a download? Cheers

I know this was on a thread recently, but it's easier to start a new one, just to bring those of you in Scotland up to date.
This is from the Scottish Association of Landlords today:
"We are delighted to report that after a long campaign by SAL, the housing minister has announced that fire...
As title !
Single entry ground front door. twin stairs to basement . Each side of basement (It was knocked into one years ago) has its own fire escape etc .
what would be the Basic level of Fire/smoke detection equipment that"should be required" for each of the 2 floors ?
Thanks
Hi
I need to replace two smoke alarms in my house, one is in the hallway and the other on the upstairs landing. They are interlinked, and 240 volt powered.
Which type of smoke alarm would be best for these places, and do you have any suggestions of any particular brand of smoke alarm to use...
Hi all.
I have a friend who is having trouble with her local council. Long story.
Although she rents it out privately, the council seems to have got involved through an allegation that the property was being used (unknown to her) as an HMO.
Anyway, it's now back as a private rental and run...
So I've got a job they want a consumer unit moving to the adjacent wall and a few alterations in the kitchen and a couple of new dedicated circuits one for a double oven and one for the Hob.
This obviously will require a EIC
The property is around 20 years old and has no mains wired smoke...
Ive got a new extension to wire up.
My question is, do I need to encoporate mains fed smoke alarms into both story's of the extension? The customer says it required for the building regs.
Thanks guys
Saw a guy testing smoke alarms by blowing vapour into them from his e-cig today. Don't remember reading about that method in the manufacturer's instructions (or anywhere else). Hmm.
Hi - a forum post got me thinking about domestic fire alarms and BS5839.
I haven't bought the Standard (just check the prices ...) but the IET's Electricians Guide to Fire Detection and Alarm Systems is a handy guide book, a brother to OSG and similarly priced. Also I picked up Aico's...
hi guys need a bit of insight here. Wiring up mains smoke alarms and interlinking with heat detector in property. Came across a bit of a grey area with legislation. Now I know it can be wired on its own circuit or on with an existing lighting circuit but I can't find anything telling me if the...
Ive been having a read in the electricians guide to the building regs with regards fire safety and a Grad D LD3 system, with regards the wiring of smoke and heat alarms it says on page 147 that alarms are required to:
b) be permanently wired with an independent circuit to the dis board or...
Evening,
I've just been asked to install some mains powered smoke alarms to a customers property, can I still add these to an existing lighting circuit (if the alarms have a battery back up) or do I need a dedicated RCD Controlled circuit from the CU?
Hi, just looking for a bit of advice for those who do more of this sort of work than myself, which is hardly ever.
I have had a customer today ask me for advice about a house she is preparing to rent as a HMO. 3 bed house, not overly large, over two floors, so not a licenced HMO.
The council...
