Had a job last evening/night, strip out and replace all lights in conduit and singles in a commercial unit.
Had all the conduit and fittings up by 10pm, some awkward places but neat job and feeling pleased with myself.
Went to my vehecle to get the cable, and realised that in my rush between the...
This may be a daft question so please excuse me.
Why is a domestic 230 volt supply protected by a 100A 415 volt fuse.
The house I am helping with at the moment has a 100A 415 volt main fuse, that's what it says on the fuse holder...
Hi all.
So, I have pretty much no understanding of electrics and I joined this forum just so I could ask you lovely electricians a cheeky question which I understand is a really stupid thing to ask.
[This is the back story which you can just skip if you're not interested:
I got sold...

If we have a double pole RCD which is, let's say 30mA 80A, will it trip in an overload situation above 80A in a similar manner to an 80A incomer? Or is it just 'rated' at 80A in the same way a switch may be rated at 6A or whatever?
I'm sure it's a dumb question that I should know the answer to...

on a timber framed house how are ring main circuits run , ie in external walls are they taken up through horizontal timbers of the ceiling voids and then run through vertical timbers socket to socket. only asking as the 1 copy of building regs explained states that horizontal timbers must not be...
Just run a switched 1 amp spur for a light off a kitchen ring.
Load goes to a wall switch and back to a socket for a plug in led driver.
Testing it out I get 38v/50 hz at the socket.
Why?
what's happening guys?
Could this be apparent voltage on the neutral and the live isn't working...
Alright, I'm still stumped about a basic electrical concept (No I'm not an electrician nor do I pretend to be, so don't worry! :))
I've always thought (and been taught) that voltage was comparable to water pressure and that current was comparable to the volume of water that is passing through...
we've all had them daft accidents, nowt serious, and near misses at work etc.
the other day i was stripping a crappy 6mmt&e with my side cutters when the earth core snapped and i smacked myself on the forehead leaving a small cut and a hugh lump.
i had an apprentice once who whilst trying to...
Sorry bout this:o
How do you know what size the conductors are on an installation easily:confused: I seem to remember a friend of mine had a guide that showed overall size including insulation and then it showed copper CSA.
Is this avaliable?
Thinking about how to size bonding conductors...
did my 2330 practical test the other day, got to the testing part of the exam and i had to explain what tests i was doing and how i was going to do it, anyway the first test was the r1+r2 of the lighting circuit.
so i removed the earth from the earth bar and connected it with the phase in the...
I'm also not an Electrician so excuse the lack of knowledge here if this comes across as a particularly stupid question but wanted to find an answer online before ringing an electrician and asking stupid questions :)
We've lived in our house for almost a year now and the meter was installed by...
