Hello all, just been thinking over Voltage drop!!
1. Where does the 3% and 5% figures for voltage drop (VD) come from? Appendix 4 (BS7671) gives the figures but why the different values between lights and sockets?
2. Also permitted voltage levels are -6% and +10% from 230V giving a min of 216V...
Gentlemen
I have a question for your perusal. A 3kW 230volt submersible pump is connected to a long extension cable (60 metres). Approximate current drawn is I=3000watts/230volts = 13amps (ignoring PF and efficiency). Cable is rated at 0.03 volts/amp/metre therefore the volt drop is 0.03x13x60...
Hi All
First posting to the forum so I hope that I've posted in the correct place.
I'm looking to install a doorbell at my home in France. The distance between the bell push and the location of the bell/chime is about 40 m. I originally wanted a battery operated unit but I've been warned that...
hi guys
Need some help in calculating voltage drop on a branched radial circuit. (13A design load 2.5mm cable)( cu to junction box 8m 2.5mm)
for a standard loop in loop out radial it would be IbxDxmV/m/1000
this circuit has 2 branches from the junction box
one/ 10m long ( 1 double...
Hi folks Iknow this topic has been beaten to death on this forum but after reading some of the posts and speaking to some of my co workers I am still a littleconfused, I am aware there is several ways of calculating voltage drop but amstill unsure of when to use the correction factor of 1.2 and...
Hi
I've been asked to provide a supply to a machine shop on a farm. The nearest supply is 170m away.
I'm working out the vd/a/m and I'm looking at having to install a 25mm 2 core SWA to compenate. But that is while working out the current carrying capacity of the cable at 152amps (Ref. E) or...
When selecting a cable and taking voltdrop in to acount is it 3% for lighting or 5% for other loads of 230v
Because the voltage obviously changes from anything from 216V up to 253V.
Thanks :)
When ticking the box for verification of volt drop on an innitial verification whats the procedure for this ?
Would you not need loads to be running to get an accurate reading?
Thanks simon :)
I am going to be installing a sub main from a house db (at meter position) to shed(1), then from that shed to shed(2), then from that to shed(3).
I am aware that lighting is max 3% drop (6.9v of 230v)
non lighting is max 5% drop (11.5v of 230v)
voltage under no load at supply...
Hello everyone just want a little help how you would calculate the volt drop if
230 single phase heater circuit
line & neutral conductors combined resistance of 0.68
Temperature at 20 degrees and load current of 16A?
show calculations
got this in my 2395 today wanna make sure I used the...
Hi, I am Nicholas, I repair computers from home for a low paying hobby and repair PC power supplies with the skill of replacing bulging capacitors. I will try other repairs using the same skill of desoldering and soldering, and I am living in a single flat here in Auckland NZ.

Hi everybody.
I have a question (still learning, passed 17th edition and part P, but I'm not yet registered).
If you use formula from On-Site Guide p.140 what the design current you put in the formula, to calculate max length of cable for 11.5V.
If 32amp then the maximum length of ring final...
Its been along day, I've just finished off with looking around a big garden which has all sorts of electrical things going and would appreciate a bit of advice on VD.
Garden is supplied by 2.5mm SWA (buried), at present taking about 1000W from a 20A MCB in the garage CU. The chap wants 2...
I have been asked by the R&D team in the office to find out if it complies with BS7671 if we supply upto a 500W load at a distance of upto 50m (loads of upto 40w every meter - adding upto 500w), supplied by a 50v D.C. Transformer.
Situation
Each load requires 36v D.C.
Each load will be fitted...
Is there a voltage drop from DNO transformer to incoming supply? For a standard 100A supply to a house so they design cable to with stand no VD as so at maximum demand there will be no VD. It is then up to us to design circuits as to have as little as possible so that 230v remains everywhere. Of...
2395 question regarding voltage drop, cant tremeber the question but it basically asked what is the voltage drop for a 40 amp circuit at 230v with a combined live conductor resistance of .23 ohms any idea? it had me stumped.
thanks
I'm having a bit of a blonde moment, I'm trying to work out the volt drop on a 3 phase Submain, the Submain is to be supplying a 3phase board loaded with rcbo's all single phase loading, I can't for the life of me remember how to do it I think it's working out the single phase vd and multiplying...
The voltage drop is causing the inverter to turn on and off like 50 times in the early morning and in the evening.
My grid tie Fronius IG 30 inverter is keep turning on and off like 50 times before it connects to the grid in the early morning because of the voltage drop. In the evening it...
Hi, (new to forum, first thread)
Trying to get my head round voltage drop and using the calcs in practice.
I have radial circuit - 16 amp MCB on a 30mA RCD - 2.5 flat T+E out of household consumer unit, straight through wall and running in plastic conduit along outside of wall and into garage...
Hi Guys, I'm fairly new to the industry and have sat and passed all the relevant exams to become a Domestic installer. I'm a little stuck with one of my pieces to be assessed by NICEIC. I'm doing a full rewire at my dads house and would like to check that I'm calculating the cable volt drop...
