What does the machine actually do as an whole and you say the original mechanical set-up caused may issues.. was this down to old machine and worn parts meaning it has lost all its original true design ratios that can cause major running issues.

Your right on all of above manufacturing date of machine is 1959 its job is to dry cloth app 2m wide with a continous input of 60m pieces. The split pulley arrangment is also good way of speed control when set the 3kw motor split pulley will be fixed permantely(no mechanical speed control)leaving the1.1kw motor to have over speed via split pulley the idea of over speed on the 1.1kw motor is to feed the cloth faster on to the 3kw motor to avoid shrinage

well you got my thoughts but without full working knowledge of machine and material behaviour I cant comment much further ... like has been mentioned closed loop feedback is best way and is very accurate and many options as to what gives the feedback ref' ... but you have more insight to this setup than me and hypothetically seems feasable but I would really need to know and see the machine running to give the best solution ..

you can use 2 inverters slaving one to the other and an encoder this would keep the speed variations to a minimum.
I dont know what inverters you are using but the instructions should be in the manuals

Like I said at the beginning, closed loop IIRC.

You can even get kit with a master encoder in software which the others will follow with a lead or lag for web tension control.
Big in newsprint.
Use to work for the company that basically "invented" the system as an Engineer.
