10.5kw shower run off 6mm

I work for a housing association and we've been told that any shower above 8.5Kw MUST be wired in 10mm cable. Seems excessive to me as it depends on derating factors as mentioned above. Lots of cursing at work!!

I know it's a pig to work with isn't it. Big fat cable in fiddly little normal fittings. I have cracked many a patress trying to persuade the cable to do as its told in a ceiling isolator ......

That is why we have "good practice" but aswell as our actual rules and regs. Over 9Kw 10mm for me everytime.

This is not facecious, but a serious question:
I really want to know from someone who does, why do you insist on fitting larger cable than the calculations and tables in 7671 state is necessary? What percieved 'advantage' do you believe you or the client are gaining?

I'd agree with the use of the Crabtree cord pull isolator. They aren't a perfect design, but they are the best available.

been in trade 7 years, fresh out of college just 1 year though. went in thinking i knew everything i needed to, came out realizing i still had loads to learn and still am. this has been an issue with most the sparks i've worked with. The one company i do work for insist i come out of fused spurs(from load side) with 2.5 to any other spurs or sockets despite me telling them 1.5 will do but all i get is a condecending "just do it". the way i look at it is if its safer and you're paying then its ok, but if i'm paying i'll do it to the regs.

I suppose for me over design is peace of mind .
Every one is on the insulation war path now days , if it dont move insulate it .
That length of 6mm may be good today but next week it may be in a rock wool bath !
If the job is that tight on margin to make it undo able then we wont !
As for the advantage they gain , when their new 10kw shower packs up in a few years time they will be over the moon that they can fit the next size one up that is then out with no re dec required .
Who would have thought 10 kw would be main stream even ten years ago !

but who knows what will be main stream in the next 10 years. things are drawing less and less power now but giving better performence. you can only design a circuit to the clients requirements and you charge them accordingly. if i charge a fee for larger cable size than neccesary then i could lose the job.
