124 volts on earth

Eve Chaps,

Went to look at a house extension today and put my meter on the sockets and lights.

I found that I had 124v on the earth but no tripping.

When I touched the terminal I got no shock etc.

Any ideas ?

split the earths from the CU one at a time to locate which circuit has the fault. then investigate that circuit. continuity, IR etc. etc. could be a crossesd N/E

Could it be the cpc between the line not connected some place therefore giving half the line voltage?

What do I do if so ?

Found the circuit its down stairs lighting

need to isolate and do some continuity tests mate.

Also found it was on the sockets too

Yeh BE a nightmare this one

bot the N and E are connected all together in the CU. dis each cpc in turn to trace fault to 1 circuit. then dead test that cct.

Rest of house was fine .....Only 3 sockets showing this fault

I found the circuit at fault (lighting)

I also pulled breaker for the lighting and was ok but it also took power of 3 sockets

Iwas getting the voltage between N and E

If the cpc is unconnected at one end etc wont it pull half the voltage ?

Yeh I isolated the socket problem and will break into the ring for that.

But oo rrrrr lighting ?

Was you testing for voltage with a high impedance multi meter?
