Hello everybody. Could somebody give me some advice on the following please.

Installed downlighters in my bathroom about 10 years ago which have been working fine. At the time of installation I made sure the loft insulation was not surrounding no where near my lights due to the heat that they output.

Im now re-insultating my loft and wondered how I go about covering the lights with insulation? I have seen like these fire proof covers in screwfix and metal shields but I thought they were quite expensive. Then I noticed they now supply these 12v lamps and label them as coolfit.

Could anybody point me in the right direction in to what would be suitable so I can totally cover my lights with insulation.

Thanks Tony.

Yeah i'm kinda lost, i thought the new firerated d/ls were to maintain the ceiling fire protection rather than keep insulation of them, i HATE downlighters of every shape or form, i want the man who invented them dead

At my last assesment I showed my assesor the fire rated downlights I'd installed in a bedroom. He said you could just as well use clay flower pots, a lot cheaper & still keeping the isulation off the fitting. Anyone else heard of this or similar, I'm not sure.

all well and good but has said flower pot got a bs number on it? i bet not and when the place goes up in smoke who gets the stick?

Insulation and down lighters are a nightmare and fire hoods are bloody dear. My installs are always good but who knows what a customer could do several years down the line? Loft insulators careful conduct has already been mentioned. I hadn't heard about the "flower pot" method before, much cheaper than the hoods!

RIGHT .
First thing tomorrow im straight out to buy flowerpots for my downlighters, grow bags for earth rods ,
and a pair of knickers for my condiut and on the way back I'll pop in the doctors for a bottle of prozac:D

Regulation section 527 Page 107

SELECTION AND ERECTION OF WIRING SYSTEMS TO MINIMIZE THE SPREAD OF FIRE.

How could we be sure FLOWER POTS meet these requirements?

Also, Reg: 133 page 18

SELECTION OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

reg, 133.1.1 Every item of equipment shall comply with the appropriate British standard. In the absence of British standard reference shall be made to the appropriate IET standard or appropriate national standard of another country.

Has anybody tested the FLOWER POT method or is it just theory?

because if it is not means tested I for sure wouldn't want that empirical test on my installation!

Unless of course it proved effective.

Laff Out Loud....:D

who still uses hoods:) couldn't wait to stop using them, fire rated downlights were a god send haven't used a hood in years.

Isn't the hood to protect heat coming from the transformer?
