would a 12v 60w transformer pop if 2 x 50W bulbs connected?????????????????? make it redundant

If it had thermal protection it would probably have survived, if it was just fuse and no thermal then I wouldn't fancy its chances. You say you tested and there was no output so if there's no manual reset then it's game over and a learning curve for the customer.

I also agree with Dave that it's asking for trouble assuming the customer is only going to use 20watt replacement lamps. The installer certainly didn't do them any favours.
 
cheers, ayee it says short circuit, overload , and thermal protection, but theres no reset button, wish there was , gonna have to blag new one or pay another ÂŁ4 squid and learn to check everything before i start... what has happened the bulbs have gone and he has replaced with 2x50w...
 
the electric shop i went too, and found it is edmundsons only stock the 60w max 1s.. but could order. il just change the bulbs to 20W and the two lights run off 1 transformer... but i know should be 1 for each light, never new edmundsons here but trade under different name
