1653

Hi all,

i've been looking at getting myself a tester and was considering the fluke 1653b but I've been given the chance to get a 1653 for £170, it comes with all the leads and box but it doesn't have a calibration cert.

whats the difference between the 2?? Are the differences worth the extra £200 I'd probably pay for a second hand one??

The Fluke 1653B offers the following additional features compared to the 1653:

  • Faster high current loop test - useful but not essential.
  • Variable RCD current mode for customized settings - useful, but odd nominal RCD ratings only usually encountered in industrial installations.
  • PASS/FAIL indication for RCD tests - useful, but only novice testers probably would need this.
  • Select voltage measurement between L-N, L-PE and N-PE - useful, but not essential, just move the probe connections to suit each measurement.
  • Zero adapter for easy test lead compensation, available as new accessory and also included with standard scope of supply - useful, but cheaper alternative methods are available.
  • Extended Memory - the data collection and downloading is a complicated procedure, pen and paper is far quicker, only useful if you're a masochist.
  • Extended documentation mode (UK only) - the data collection and downloading is a complicated procedure, pen and paper is far quicker, only useful if you're a masochist.

So in conclusion I would get the 1653 and save some dosh mate.
My comments about the memory and documentation mode apply equally to the 1653 and 1653B. Don't buy the 1653 because you have been seduced by the downloading capability if you have never used it before, save even more dosh and buy a 1632 (A, B or C model) and spare yourself the nightmare of wasted money on a complicated feature you're extremely unlikely to use.

Cheers for the info, looks like I'll be going for the 1653 then as I won't need extended memory as I won't be using the software anyway and the rest I can live without for the price difference.

Cheers for the info.

Got it at £170 and I'm well pleased, looks brand new too, the guy said he's only used it a handful of times as he used to be an electrical engineer.
I was going to try and be cheeky and knock him down some more but I couldn't bring myself to do it as it was in such good condition.
