Everything hangs off the Regs so one way or another you'll need to get your head around it. Presumably you have a copy? There are plenty of practice exams available on line to give you an idea on what the real thing is like. Re the requirement as a mate or apprentice, that would be down to whoever was taking you on or supervising you.

If you can read and navigate a BS document you can pass this exam, all though saying that I know of several time served Electricians who still cock it up and fail.

Its multiple guess.
So if you just answer a) to every question, that's 25%.
Get another 10% for spelling your name correctly, thats nearly a pass mark without knowing anything!!:p

What's the official line on highlighting and post it notes? And what about writing in the books? I was told the first two were ok but the latter is a no-no.
To be honest it's not needed just refer to the contents page, that all I did and got 98%

For sure you can't write in your BYB. I don't think highlighting is considered writing, and I did that while doing revision, rather than so much for the exam. The post-its can be used to help speed you finding the start page of the chapters, but as Pete says the info is all there. Good luck with your study and exam !

Thankfully this one is under my belt but thought I'd better check ready for the 18th! Is it the full exam we'll have to do or just a top up?

In terms of tips - like others have said, use the index. The exam generally works its way through the book so the first few questions are found in section 1 etc. Somewhere at home I've got a breakdown that my tutor gave us. Also I used a lot of those little coloured post it tabs to highlight sections for easy navigation. Also used them down the side to highlight most common topics e.g. Cable calcs, ZS etc etc.
