Afternoon lads
just as the title says really, iam starting my 17th edition course next thursday, been flicking through the brb but its too much to take in, anyone got any tips on how to get an definate pass rate
thanks

Ask you're self a question then look it up in the regs. The secret is to know how to navigate the index and how quick you can find the regs to the questions they ask.
When you get your course notes you will be given a weighting to the questions asked in each section, they should not give you more than this in any section. Do'nt worry though it's not bad to do, just learn where to look and you will be ok.

Good luck

I found if you don't try to remember the regulations but concentrate on what the general theme is in each part. The break down of the questions is something like:-

Part 1 - 4 Questions
Part 2 - 3 Questions
Part 3 - 5 Questions
Part 4 - 14 Questions
Part 5 - 15 Questions
Part 6 - 6 Questions
Part 7 - 10 Questions
Appendices - 3 Questions

It seemed like with my exam the questions were asked in that order so was quite easy to find your way. Use the index if you get completely stuck, its a bit vague but helped me.

Same as Ruston really - It's important to really know where to look in the book quickly as the exam is timed and it is an "open book" exam which means if you dont know the answer you can just look it up!

Hello ruston
thanks for the advice, could you explain this part tho " you,ll be given a weighting to the questions, they should not give you more than one in each section"
sorry I cannot understand this part of your advice but get the idea that the questions follow the brb index

from the test specification the exam is broken down as follows:

Multiple choice online test:
Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2008
Duration: 2 hours No of questions: 60
Outcome number
Unit title
Number of items
Approximate percentage%
1
Scope, object and fundamental principles
4
7
2
Definitions
3
5
3
Assessment of general characteristics
5
8
4
Protection for safety
14
23
5
Selection and erection of equipment
15
25
6
Inspection and testing
6
10
7
Special installations or locations
10
17
8
Appendices
3
5
Total

60
100

so your major marks are in safety and selection and erection with quite a lot on the special locations. Do a few past papers and you will have answered 50% of the questions and also had a chance to understand C&G language which is confusing at the best of times. And yes they do follow the BRB sequence, just make sure you are happy with your understanding and know where stuff is in the book and it should be OK.

Sorry for the delay . It's as Richard has outlined in his post. Theoretically you should not need to go back to sections once you go to another , but in the update I did for the 17th I had quite a few questions from definitions, probably duplicate answers , but it seemed disjointed at the time.
Edited because my pc decided to post on it's own:dead:

Well said Ruston
If I just wanted a pass I wouldnt be on this forum getting tips, not only to help me pass but to pass well, and ensure I get to grips with as much electrical theory as my brain can take in. Yes its an open book exam but just looking up the answer isnt enough for me, when I learn something I like to learn it thoroughly heory as my brain can take in. I think the best tip, is to get some coloured lables, and use them to lable the differnt sections.
On my red book, I used one colour for part 1, another colour for part 2 and for the page with thw diagrams of earthing systems, another colour for part 3 and another for part 4, the page with the RCD formula, 42, 43and 44.
Then I carried on with the first colour for part 5, 52, 53,54, 55 and 56. I marked up each of the appendicies, with appendicies 8 & 9, 11 & 12 and 14 & 15 on the same lables and also marked the index.
I find it helps me navigate the book much easier.

done my 17th edition in june and got 97%.Try and do as many past papers as possible.Like Spinlondon said mark your book up with coloured sticky notes. Familiarise yourself with the contents page so you now which section to look in. If you can't find the answer for a question leave it and move on because you have 2 mins per question.Study hard and a lot of the questions you will know without even looking in the book.Good luck mate don't stress too much you will be ok.
