Hi,

Im new to this website so i dont know whether this question has been asked.

Im installing electrics in a new build 2 storey extension, now im installing a ring main for the sockets and 1 lighting feed for all the lights. (Thers 9 sockets and 26 spotlights) They have a 16th edition fuseboard fitted and im unsure whether i should install RCBO's to feed new circuits as the RCD side is full or should i replace the fuseboard at an extra cost to the client.

I look forward to hearing your answers.

Am i missing something ?? Why the concern about having 26 lights on one circuit ??

If they are halogen downlights which take maximum 50w bulbs that would be 50 X 26 = 1300w
Divide that by 230v and you only have 5.65 A , thats without even applying diversity, so even a 6A rcbo can handle this ok. Please forgive me if im being stupid here.

The reason why the type of spotlight is important as it could be an inductive load - in which case your 5.65A current is then multiplied by a factor of 1.8 to find the VA. You will then end up with a current of 10.17 amps which is pushing it for a 10A rcbo. Plus such a large inductive load could cause switching problems as Hightower (?) mentioned.

I dont know why everyone is jumping to the conclusion that there are 26 spotlights switched on one switch. FYI There are 4 no different rooms with the spotlights in each with there own switch. 1 Circuit is definitely enough because they are 50W halogen lamps. I have decided to put them on a 10A because i have 3 no outside lights on the same circuit aswell.

Dazza1976 im glad you can see what im on about, so thanks for that
