i was only going to do cctv , alarms , and electrical installs that i know. I would never install anything if i did not know the answer to fix it under fault conditions.

Still the advice to get some experience first is sound. Imagine telling a client you can't perform a task because you are out of your depth. Your reputation would soon suffer, and the industry has many mouths and ears.

The loan sounds like it would end up as a perpetual debt. Is it through five lamps by any chance ? I borrowed £1k through a job centre scheme and that took three years to pay off on their terms. It was never a burden, but I hate to have debts of any kind usually.

Mike, you sound pretty switched on for someone of 19 in my opinion. If that loan could get you a driving license and a van / car (insurance will be expensive unfortunately), then I would say that is a worthwhile investment in yourself. If you have 18 months solid work experience that is a an awful lot more than the 5 week brigade who operate in peoples homes. If you had ECS card, Your Current Quals plus Driving Licence you will definately get agency work as a mate, which will get you earning. Then you can start your NVQ3 to get fully qualified and then there will be many opportunities for you.

If your 19 you could always get a motorbike with good panniers on for your tools to do site work for a start till you get your car test passed.
You need to get the experience behind its a must, you cant really pick and choose jobs these days you'll never earn anything
