The immersion heater you have is of the old style and is not allowed under the latest regulations, the fact that is it is very likely that it has no overheat stat and WHEN (35 years old) the normal thermostat fails it can boil and apart from the ehscalding issue, it could have very seriuos consequences especially if you have a plastic cold water storage cistern (fill with boiling water and collapse) you shoudl really change your immersion for a new one, you can still get the Sink/Bath dual element type but it will incorporate a manually resetable safety stat.

To answer your question directly it is likely to be a 2 / 3kw dual immersion.

There are a couple of different ways it could be wired. The mains could go through the immersion heater sensor and then to the switch, then depending which way the switch is made, it either feeds a 2kW or 3kW heater. The only way to be sure how it has been wired is to have an electrcian turn the power off and take the cover off to investigate.

Sorry to post three in a row, but on another thread I found this...

"Before going ahead with any of this consider:
How much are you REALLY going to save each year? A 4kw, south facing system is maybe going to produce £400 worth of exportable electricity a year at 3.2p per unit. This export price is actually very similar to the unit price of the gas you would in theory be replacing via solar. Given that you are probably going to use say 50% of the solar electricity elsewhere anyway (a good assumption since anyone considering adding immersion usage is going to maximise use throughout the house anyway), you are left with at most maybe £100 worth of usable electricity to power said immersion. I understand that units such as Emma - which regulate the immersion current avoiding inadvertant grid energy use - cost at least £1000, plus fitting etc. Now one must assume also a lifespan similar to an inverter, perhaps 10/15 years.
To my mind you would only just about save enough in gas costs to pay for the unit before it needed replacing. Perhaps my thinking is flawed. Certainly if you could fit such a system for say £200 it makes much more sense, but the systems I've seen at those prices appear to be too simple and liable to actually cost you in inadvertant grid use.

@Andrew54
Before you 'dis' the model, it would be worthwile you reading THIS whole thread http://www.electriciansforums.net/p...pv-immersion-heater-proportional-control.html

For real world results, actually reading the above thread, you would gain a lot of infomration especially the posts by Brian Wright22 starting around here: http://www.electriciansforums.net/p...heater-proportional-control-6.html#post598254
Thanks Worcester, I am not dismissing anything yet. Yes, read all of that and the imersun does seem a good product but very expensive with only a 3 year warranty.

For those that it will help I noticed today that the TotalPowerShop people are now stocking a Radio Frequency (RF) switch which can be used to hardwire appliances to be controlled by their Renewable Energy Management Unit (REMU I - model no. TP-S610A).

Have a look at their website energy management unit monitor control solar wind hydro generated electricity

The REMU I unit will monitor how much energy your house is consuming and how much power you are getting from your solar panels or any other renewable energy source. It will automatically switch on your immersion heater (and up to 2 other appliances) when enough surplus energy is being generated.

Their starter kits whihc include a RF switch are £199 plus p&p.

But that is only a switched unit and not a proportional controller as SolarImmersion from SolarImmersion ? Surplus Solar Energy Water Heater |

THIS system will have a variable proportional immersion control add-on as well as smart plugs/switches and wireless radiator thermostats ready to be added within 4-6wks. Will be comparibly priced to the Immersun but offers a much more rounded solution - primarily provides a scaleable, accurate monitoring solution with options to add smart control features. Also, wireless large-screen displays.

@ £199, SolarImmersion from SolarImmersion ? Surplus Solar Energy Water Heater | looks like a product that is priced right with almost all the features as of any other unit. Also, remote switching to control a heavy load like 3 kW immersion is found to be unreliable on long term use.

Looks very impressive.

@solarcity - thanks Chris, yes it is a really interesting solution that's totally scaleable. I've been very impressed with Greenologic so far and it's really good timing that they are releasing their new Elios4You platform now. Commercial/3phase local or remote monitoring and control solutions are also available - we're helping one of our clients with an IntellyModem monitoring solution that allows remote dashboard access via the web and also controls a wireless large screen display in the end-customer's reception area. More of a commercial set-up than the domestic-focused Elios4You though.
