Does anyone know when they stopped making 2.5 T&E with only a 1mm earth wire?

Cheers, Ron

I think it ceased production in the late 70's, maybe Lenny can check in an old edition of 'The IEE Regulations' I know it was still listed in the 14th edition.

**Yes, it vanished in the 15th edition which was published in 1981**

The condition is of course the key factor but keep in mind that that cable was around in the late 1960's and could easily be in excess of 40 years old, well past the expected safe life.

No way of telling a cables age, and being PVC insulated and sheathed, there is no real life expectancy. Depends very much if the cable has had a hard life, such as being constantly overloaded among other things. Cables that have led an easy life installed in correctly etc, you would hardly know how old it was. The only other thing from that sort of era, is the ''green goo'' syndrome. Certainly i'd be changing them ...lol!!!!

In 35 years I’ve never seen the dreaded green goo. It’s copper oxide! Only caused by bad connections and heat, bad workmanship!

I'll have to take you out on a few of our local authority PIR's, schools, libraries etc. never a week goes by without finding some of that stuff and it certainly IS NOT copper oxide which is jet black like soot!

The evidence of it being a plasticiser is backed up by the fact that cable manufactured post late 1970's does not have this plasticiser and does not suffer from the 'green goo' effect!

The good news is the Health and Safety Executive have declared it to be non-carcinogenic however it can still irritate the skin.

We always use gloves when we find this stuff.

Here's a good article to dispell the myths!: http://109.75.163.57/fileadmin/user_upload/documents/public/switched_on/SwitchedOn-Issue-19.pdf
